I have a 2007 FXDWG that sometimes makes an awful racket when starting. It sounds like the jackshaft isn't engaging all the way. Other times it starts just fine. I have a new starter for it and want to know if there are any tricks I need to know before replacing it. I also want to know if i will have to remove the primary cover to replace it. Thanks!
Yes ... you will have to remove the primary cover.
The starter is really easy to remove ... only two mounting bolts (one of which is where the ground from the battery is affixed) ... but, from the primary side, the bolt that goes into the jackshaft also has to be removed to get the starter off your bike ....
Other than that, there is one other bolt that'll have to be removed to take off the positive battery lead, and the connector for the starter will have to be taken off ... after that it is done ....
So, yes ... you'll have to drain your primary and remove the primary cover ....
Are you referring to the big BANG at startup? If so the starter may not be the problem. I hate to sound like th MOCO but almost all 07 DYNAs do it. Its a comp sprocket problem.
