They've given you some good advice. Saddlebags will make your life better. Pack your tools, goggles, gloves, raingear etc in there and save your sissy bar area for clothes, gear, etc. The leftover space in saddlebags is a great place to haul food/snacks/beer/bottled water that you'll inevitably pick up on the way.

I use an HD overnight bag on the backrest. It holds plenty of stuff, but is low profile so I have lots of room to strap stuff on the outside and on top. Of course you can strap stuff on top of saddlebags too.
The passenger seat allows for a whole nother sissy bar bag (or sleeping bag, tent, whatever.) Two HD overnight bags makes a huge platform to stack/strap stuff on. I have a huge assortment of bungees, elastic webbing, quick ties to strap stuff on with.

BTW you can only slide one bag on the backrest at once, but you can strap one in the passenger area and it's secure without the backrest slip on.

Here's the overnight bag I use, but there are tons of bags on the market:

I hike/camp regularly every warm season. And I'm a minimalist for things like this. I have the same overnight bag, that should fit everything I need. And then I plan to just strap a sleeping bag and small tent onto the rear seat. But I don't plan on taking anyone with me on my bike for camping trips. 2-up would be a whole different story. Think I'll keep the 2 person camping to cage driving. Besides, the Subie Forester was made for trips like that.

Speaking of which, wife and I took vacation and are heading to the hills of Tennessee (from Ohio) next week for a week of hiking. Can't wait!

I have these bags, there is also a tailbag that clips on top of those. all three hold enough stuff for me to stay in a hotel for about 4 nights and that is without the sides expanded. I'm going to get a quick detach sissy bar to strap my tent and sleeping bag to and I should be set.

I looked and I dont have any pics on this computer but,I strongly suggest getting some good quality backpacker grade gear. I suggest that for the space, weight, performance, and durability.

When it was just me I would only bring a bag and a bed role but now with the wife I bring a tent. I usually don't take a stove because it is almost only an overnight but I would have room for my whisperlite, pot, crazy little spoons, and some freeze dried dinners\breakfasts. Aslo cowboy coffee is pretty dam good.

I ususly bring the following
2 Bags $250ish ea
2Therm-a-rests $80ish ea
2 man Tent $200ish, my tent isnt really a very good 2 man but it does just fine for a man and a woman.

they reason we want to camp is to do it more often for cheaper. if you camp out it turns a once a month trip into an every weekend trip. id pick a hotel if i could but rather not spend that money everyweekend

yeah, not to mention gas prices this summer! A 400 round trip in the car to go camping may very well cost a hotel stay!

I have a side mount plate also (road6customs). My bike is still on the stand waiting on wheels so I mocked it up last night, I have the burly shocks too. looks to clear everything. I'm pretty sure the left side will hit the belt though, I will probably have to put my upper guard back on for long trips, as will you I would assume.
