There's really quite a difference between the "live" weight of a small passenger, able to allow the bike to move, much of which is below your pack, and the "dead" weight of attached, strapped-on baggage, all of which could be above your seat.

The contents of my luggage weigh from 60#-up. Even keeping the very heaviest of that low, in the saddlebags, the extra dead weight near the top of the sissy-bar makes a felt degradation in the handling on my Dyna. The reason for this, separate from the added weight, is the increased inertia due to how far it is away from the pivot point...@ the tire's contact patch.

Keep the weight low.

What is the bag you are using? Is it waterproof?

60# seems heavy... I think much more than I pack on mine (I'm gonna weigh it next time I got it all out). Or maybe I just don't ride as hard as everyone else... but I've never felt the negative effects from having my sissy bar bag on. I agree that it would be better to have the weight low, thats commen sence. But I don't care for bags on a Dyna and I'm not spending the money on bags to run em a couple times a year when we go camping. If I was gonna carry that kinda weight all the time, maybe... well actually I'd have a Streetglide if I was gonna carry that weight all the time.

Holly crap! Are you bringing your waterbed to go camping? Even with large caliber toys and ammo, I can't imagine 60#.

If you need to take all that gear...leave the wife at home

Does she know that she cant plug in her curling iron in the tent?
I got lucky, my OL was an avid backpacker and outdoorsy type girl before we met. She biked, hiked and canoed all over Upstate NY, so she knows how to travel light. Lately though, she's been staying home and I get to travel solo, with a bro or my kid. He rides my Beemer these days.
Thats us last year taking off on a 2500mi ride. He had a XS650 Yamaha then.

Nah, that's cool. It's just that you didn't post your comment to anyone in general, and it came up right after I posted. Even though I didn't post anything about what I pack. So it confused me a bit.
