Was pricing new stock street bob and they were asking $14.4K + $1290 for putting bike together...sounds like destination charge at auto dealers...Is this right?
Good luck gettin away from their prep, frieght n setup fee's. I did well on a leftover 09 XR1200 and avoided those fee's. Note the key word-Leftover, the shops get penalized for leftover models ( can't order new year models.. or somethin like that). When I bought my LO I got the same thing as you are right now, Prep.. fees. All shops here in CT are w/in a few hundred of each other when the final #'s come out. The ones who say MSRP don't have the extra fee's built in to the sticker price. The shops with a 1 to 1.5k hike have the fee's built into sticker. Funny, if you look at HD's 2011 lineup catalog there is a note in the very back giving delearships carte blanche. If the new models are moving off the floor they have you. 2min, 2 days, 2weeks... after you say no deal, someone will ante up and pay the fee's. Not to say for all, some have avoided the fee's and got a great deal. Keep hunting and play your hand. BTW, Welcome aboard and Good Luck!
When I purchased mine in 2008 I shopped around. I priced Bikes in Sherman Tx, Paris Tx, and Allen Tx. Prices were so far apart. One dealer was $2000 more and Paris Tx was the least expensive. Since that purchase I have referred several people and my father drove 400 miles to purchase an Ultra Limited from them. Great people to do business with.
Listen, there is a great tool called the HD locator. Use it! Send an email or call every dealer in your state or however far your willing to drive. I got a 2011 FXDC for $12,700 out the door with sales tax included. So basically i got the bike for 12 grand. I also got a free motorcycle cover included and free delivery to my house. Also if I choose to take the edge course through Harley they pay for that. I took the courses thru the military but might still do so, I mean why not its free..
Your best deal is simply determined on the effort you put in. If you wanna pay that crap walk in and put your money down. If you wanna be smart get the dealers playing against one another. I dont have anything against the dealers making money, but the more I keep in my pocket the better.
I had freight and setup waived ($900) also got $500 off the bike that was a 2011 Street Bob. I think it was 13800 out the door. Went to another one and they where 14800 out the door. There is room to deal you just have to walk out if they are not willing to deal with you. I know it is hard to do. I walked in with cash and told them if they didn't give me a better price I would go some where that would. I also added mods and told them I didn't like there price and they dropped it $400.
