I put a new headlight on today, the Cobra II from Eastern Performance. The stock headlight has 3 wires, 1 for low beam, 1 for high beam, and 1 ground. The new light has 2 wires 1 low, 1 high, and is internally ground.
Now what I did. I unhooked the plug that is in the backbone and pulled the plug and harness up through the backbone to the neck, so I could make the connections. I needed to figure out which wire was high and which as low on the new light. So I just held the end of the wire to pins in the plug, but my hand was as steady as it needed to be and I hit 2 of the pins. When I hit the 2 pins I heard a pop and thought I just blew a fuse. Then I noticed the taillight was out. I still have brake lights just no taillight. I checked the fuses and none of them are blown, all the 15 amps and the maxi fuse.
Check your fuses....I just did a similar thing this weekend. I swapped out a Fat Boy headlight on my Fat Bob. When checking the lights for function, I just held the wires in the connector and the light came on and then I heard a little "snap". I proceeded to pull all the fuses and look at them. I didn't find any of them that "appeared" to have blown....Later this weekend I made all the wiring connections and soldered it all up. Just before I heated up the shrink wrap I though I'd check it just to make sure it was all good. Plugged it in and nothing worked. Checked the taillight and signals and they were "out" as well. So I got out my trusty manual and verified which fuse was for the taillights. Pulled the fuse and upon closer evaluation, sure enough it had blown. Popped a new fuse in and all is Good!
