Have an 08 street bob with SE intake and vance and hines slip ons which it came with used. I've long thought that the presence of o2 sensors eliminated the need for fuel programmer despite the whitish colored plugs, clean as they may be.
Anyways, pulled my plugs today to check em and stuck a small light up to the spark plug hole to see inside and what do I see but little pits in the piston. My heart cringed.
Never seeing flakes or burning or damage of any kind on the plugs, and a healthy amount of black soot residue in the mufflers, and a gassy healthy smell while running, I assumed all was good. Apparently not the case.
My initial instinct is to buy a whole new factory stock air cleaner setup and run that, I'm not going to the drag races and don't need that extra few horses. But...........the part of me that loves power and doing things right says get the SE programmer and dyno tune for the million bucks they charge ya for it. After all, I've spent this much whats a little more.
My bob only has 8000 miles and I'm looking to keep it for the long haul, any advice from you veteran techs and those with experience with this kinda thing please chime in and tell me what ya think. Thanks fellas.
How about reinstalling a stock airbox if i can get one? Has anyone running slip ons and factory airbox experienced lean conditions?
Had good luck in the past with the cobra fi2000r programmer on jap bikes simply to richen the fuel mixture. Whereas the pc3 and 5 also lean the mix in spots. Anyone ran the cobra on their 07 or newer harley?
Listening to the dealer I cant help but wonder about Screamin eagles tuner and dyno run by a harley tech. Really wish I knew more about EFI systems.
Am really leaning towards putting on a factory airbox but know that even from the factory these motors run extremely lean anyways and this would probably be a waste of time.
Starting to miss carbs and jets ha ha.
If you put the stock A/C back on then chances are it will make little difference. Your ECU is setup for a lean AFR and the O2 sensors are keeping it there, regardless of what A/C you have on.
I suggest biting the bullet and do a proper job of the fix. Pick either a SEPST or a PC5 or whatever else you are comfortable with and get a tune.
If you don't want to spend so much then why not just throw on some Xieds, they are designed for just your kind of problem.
Just get the PC and have it preprogrammed for free for your set-up. Mine worked great from the moment I started it after doing all the stage 1 mods on a summer afternoon.
Turned out to actually be carbon on the pistons, not pitting. And after consulting very reputable Harley techs they said the color of my plugs is just as it should be and they are not damaged in the least bit, indicating im not too lean. With slip ons and SE intake there is no need for programming. Hard to believe they wouldnt try to sell me a 500$ processor plus labor ha ha.
Needless to say I am very relieved to not have the problems I thought I was having. After researching ied's I'm still contemplating a set just to see how It would run at 14.2-1 as opposed to the 14.7-1 its set at.
I have your setup on my 2010 SG Custom with the addition of the PC V. This works great for me, light throttle low speed surge is now gone, darker exhaust color inside slip-ons, runs cooler, sounds and runs better than exhaust mods only. I purchased my PC V from FuelMoto and have no regrets.

I was hoping you would come to this conclusion. Once again, you are doing no damage, but there is performance to be gained (at a cost). Personally I have more than enough power and am more concerned with longevity.
