Question about Exhaust Wrap vs. Heat Shields
Before going Harley I enjoyed a classic british sports car, an MGB.
That's where and when I first heard of exhaust wrap, and what it does - it isn't nice.
Exhaust wrap will trap the heat of the very hot exhaust gases and force them out the exhaust still very hot, in fact much hotter than the factory engineers designed.
The results are :
- excess heat trapped in the head (exhaust valve side) which may result in a warped exhaust valve stem (ouch!) and most certainly in a hot intake port;
- excessive exhaust gas pressure in the muffler;
- excessive operating temperatures in the catalytic converter.
Look at this picture, this is the exhaust clamp securing the downpipe to the head; notice anything ? Cooling fins ?
I don't know why HD heads do not have cooling fins - maybe because the heads themselves are so massive.
Sure thing is, that exhaust wrap is not a good thing for heat dispersion in the head itself.
Mind you, you can always fit a longer heat shield, or even a heat shield to the heat shield !
