rain gear is a must for me too.
I kept an older yellow rain jacket that still works, but just got the new Harley pants with the better burn protection. I melted my last 2.
hands get wet.
I purchased some nice water resistant boots. Waiting for them,
Boots full of water suck.
Froggtogs, worn them 3 times in the lase 4 years. I can justify spending a ton of money when we only get 6-8 inches a year. Most times it's light enough I just forgo the rain gear.
I liked Frogg Toggs rep but was concerned about the melt on the pipes issue as well. Went to WalMart and picked up some iron on denim knee patches and ironed 'em on the potential burn area on the right leg. Issue found, issue squashed.
I use the Harley "good stuff) gortex 2 piece suit. It's a bit exspensive bu, very packable. There's som simular stuff out there without the harley badging, costing less called Pack-lite who's claim to flame is that their stuff can be folded and roled tight enough to fit in a 1 litre sport drink bottle. (Very packabe) My gortex lives in the bottom of a saddle bag along with goggles and. there's still room for a leather jacket.
This is the rain suite I use now. High visibility so when dark and raining I stick out more then my rear light. Has kept me dry in heavy rain and is made to last. I am sure there are other suites just as good but I haven't seen one yet at the 150 price point of this outfit.
If link fails is HD part number 98275-08VM order through Zannoti, chicago, M&M or some other HD retailers online for a 20% discount and will be roughly $120.00 plus shipping.
On longer trips I use this Touring Pant p/n 98362-98VM which I found April 2009 at Ebay (< USD 100,00 shippin included, a real bargain!):
I wear them over my jeans, they're waterproof, have a liner, zippers up to the waist band and protective fabric on the knees and the lower inner part of the right leg. I think it's the pre FXRG era touring pants...
In heavy rain I use my Army goretex raincoat over my leather jacket.
Forum member NOZEM sent me these Olympia 4280 GoreTex over gloves (motorcycle-superstore.com) They come with inner gloves and keep the hands dry and warm! Used them several times on my HDForums.com Mascot trip into Germany and France last year and love them!
Has any of the vets tried to use military gortex pants and jacket to stay dry on the bike? Why spend money when we were issued items (BDU or DCU) we are no longer "authorizede" to wear! I've been caught in a severe storm on the way home from work with cars parked with me on the side of the road, don't want to do that soaked again...
I've heard so much good stuff about the HD rain gear, so I went on the search and found a set on craigslist for $50, so I jumped on them. I used them for the first time a couple weeks ago and damn they are great. It's as thin as a wind breaker and warm up pants, but it works awesome. It was 47 degrees outside and all I had was a sweater on underneath and I was warm and dry. I was shocked at how good they stop the wind. The pants unzip all the way up to the hips so it's very easy to go over you boots and pants. I have never had any other type of rain gear, but I am happy with my HD gear.
