I know it sucks to spend the money but I am sure your life is worth more than $750 bucks. If I used heli-coils that is all I would be thinking about every time I rode. Just my my 2 cents though.
If done right the helicoil will last a long time and be as strong if not stronger than orginal threads
I had a rather serious breakdown today while on a ride with a buddy. I was going around a wide curve at about 65 MPH when my bike suddenly lost power. I coasted to a stop and noticed my belt was hanging off the sprocket. The bolts that hold the sprocket to the wheel were all (yes, all 5 of them) completely sheered off. It appears that one or more of them backed out, smacked against the swing arm, and were sheared off. There is damage to the rim, swing arm, belt, and sprocket. Long story short... this could have turned out far worse... I'll attribute that to luck over skill. Has anyone else had this problem? My bike is a 2006 FXDBI Street Bob (88" ci/ with EFI). It has less that 3500 miles on it. The only add ons are 180 series rear tire (previous owner, dealer installed) and Vance and Hines Short Shots (dealer installed). I know this will be expensive to fix, but is there any degree of liability from HD on their end? Thanks for the help!

You aren't the first to experience this. There is a long thread about it somewhere in the Dyna section.
In short.
- The bolts are specifically non-reusable. You should still least try to get recovery from the shop that added the tire.
- Most people seem to agree that these fasteners should be frequently checked for tightness.
Do a search for "bolts" in thread headers and you'll find the long thread.
Happened about a month ago to a buddy of mine that rode a 2007 Street Glide ... except his sprocket jammed against the swingarm and locked up the rear wheel. He said he was only doing 25mph but it was in heavy Bike Week traffic and it's a miracle he wasn't killed. He gave up on Harley's all together after that and bought a Victory.
