You need baffles for your bike to run properly.

I bought a pair of "take off" mufflers on e-bay (cheap) and punched the baffles out of them. Just like I had read in this forum a long time ago, they kind of whistled at an idle but sounded OK otherwise. I noticed no significant difference in performance. I replaced them with some Khrome Werks mufflers when I could afford it.

The baffles are not removable. You could drill a hole in them (I would recommend 1" to start with) to get more sound and slightly better performance (punching will get you the whistle as stated above by gbm). The best way to do it would be to buy new slip-ons.

The baffles are removable, and you could gut the whole can if you wanted to. The baffles I removed were in the center of the perforated core tube and looked like automotive freeze plugs. I made a plug on a 12" pipe nipple that just barely fit in the core and whanged on it with a 3 lb. sledge. 4 hits and the baffle was on the floor. They are only spot welded in place.

You did NOT remove the baffles............. Just the the plug.

I did the same thing (drilled mine out), and with a K&N full flow air cleaner, and TFI, am producing 74 hp / 78 ft/lbs torque on the Dyno.

2-1 is what I will end up putting on when I have the money...... Great sound, more torque and hp + classic harley look (look at the older models).

tack a 1inch key hole saw and drill them out then use a die grinder and smooth it down to the wled then the hole baffel will slide out its about a foot long .if you dont grind the rough edge down it will be hell to get the baffel out and it will sound like **** that 1/4 inch of lip left after the key hole saw makes a huge diff. in the sound . if you dont have the re mapp or tuner the run your stock air cleaner and it will run fine.

Semantics. You are technically correct if you consider that an automotive-type glass pack has a baffle. I don't.

Removing baffles without replacing them KILLS performance at least the one time I made the mistake of breaking the welds and doing that, don't do it save up and just buy a good set of pipes, in the long run you will be tons happier.

Buy a set of pipes. If you drill out the baffles and run open exhaust, Johnny law will make you get it reinspected then what will you put back on? Buy some V&H, keep the stock if you ever need it.
