I guess what im looking for is a cam that will bump the 88" up to hold me over till i can plop down the money for the
Mackie 95"
Looking to push it too the outer limits of a ( bolt in ) cam
Unless you are a serious tech wizard, cam data tables do little to give any insight on how a cam "feels. sounds or rides". Yeah I know if you understand what the #'s mean, then you can pretty much determine a cams attitude, but every cam is different, as is every combo and rider style. Bottom line is for a street bike that spends it's life from idle to 4500-5k 90% of the time, you need to cam the bike for that area. Looking for massive top end will always soften the bottom end, cant really have best of both no matter what people say. A cam may pull like a train down low, but will always due to the nature of the profile will run out of steam at the top of the tach..
Now depending on the rest of the combo you can always make adjustments to make up for either a soggy low end or a out of breath top end. I've given up bottom end for a healthy top end charge...and quite honestly it sucks. My bike is built for serious top end charges...problem is the bottom is kinds flat..I mean under 3k it's really no better than the old setup. Over 3k it's a beast and never seems to really run out of steam. Which is why I'll be getting rid of these 257 cams and going to something with a little more bottom end thrust. Hazing the tires from stoplights and up through 4th is alot more fun, at least for me than waiting for the needle to pass 3k before the fun begins. The rest of my setup will keep my top end awake for those late night 120mph+ blasts that occur from time to time : )
Moral of the story, don't give up bottom end on a street bike..you'll always regret it.
Very true Shiftace..... Just got off the phone with dave mackie. I fully trust what a motor builder of his experience has to say, he said i could run his 575, but.... Its pushing the bolt in envelope... He recomended his 510. My head was spinning from all the #s and cam profile BS,
Mackie 510... And DONE
