Default question about detachable sissy bar install

a question for those that have already been down this road.

i just ordered a one-piece sissy bar and detachable hardware to install on my '10 fxdwg. i already have the license plate/turn signal relocation kit from greatbikegear.com installed on the bike, so what do the back anchor points on the hardware kit mount to? will i have to buy additional bolts to make this work?

thanks in advance,

G.

I don't have the wide glide so this might or might not help. On my SB I installed the detach hardware and the bar that runs along the inside of the fender from mount point to pount point originally had a thread capture point on the front mount and a pass through on the rear (the bolt would pass through the hole from inside the fender feeding outward and thread into the light housing. The new bar had a threaded capture on both the front and rear allowing the bolt to come in from the outside of the strut, this also creates a little more room so could, if you wanted to put on a wider tire. I would think that the mount point would be something like this on the WG also.

it looks like the new bar is set up this way and the intent is to have the bolt attached to the turnsignals screw into it, but since my turnsigs are relocated i am not sure if i need to buy additional bolts to mount at the rear points or use the hardware from my turnsignal relocation kit. just wondering what others had done so i know what i'm in for when the boxes find my doorstep tomorrow.

From what I have found you will be using the same type of kit I had on my bike when I first installed the detach hardware. Here are some help hints. The bolt that the light goes into is threaded on both ends, one into the fender bracket, other the light screws onto. He is the best way to do this.
-When you remove the lights to reinstall them. Disconnect the connector, I am not sure if yours connector is under the fender or runs all the way under the seat. The latter would be better! Take a picture of the connector with the wires in it and write down which wire goes to which slot. Then de-pin the connector. MUD has a good video on how to do this, very easy.
-The bolt that the light screws onto is hollow and you will need to run the three wire from the light through the larger hole on the light housing (where the bolt screws into it) and then through the bolt. You will beed to cut off the connector ends because all three wire won't fit with the connectors on. You can either cut off enough wire attached to solder them back together or pick up some new pins from your dealer (maybe 50 cents) and repin the wires after they have been fully ran and the fender is installed.
-You can install the new fender support, screw in the front and back bolts (lights not installed yet) with the detach hardware and secure the fender. Make sure you have enough room under the fender to access the hole behind the seat from under the fender, you will need this to route the light wires!!!!!
-With the fender secured, installed the locking nut onto the rear bolt (tightens up against the light housing to hold lamp in place)(also make sure the new cover is installed on the light housing, you will know what I am talking about when you see it) and then pull the wires to the lights through the hole in the rear bolt and screw the light onto the bolt (you will need to twist the wires from inside the fender while doing this). Get the light to the angle you want and tighten the lock nut to the housing.
-Run the wire through the provided channel that gets attached to the support bracket inside the fender. then through the hole in behind the seat. (I picked up some foam channeling from the dealer to run the wire through to protect it and keep it against the fender.)
-Repair the wire and repin the connector, plug it in and you should be good to go.

Here is a pick of what the kit looks like installed. If you have any questions PM me, I will answer what I can.

Mike

FWIW, I used the Harley Turn signal relocation kit. I had to get a longer bolt to mount the Rear Dock points to my WG. They mount to where the turn signals used to be.

Blueangel - thanks for the detailed reply, but because my turn signals are already relocated the majority of your post is work that has already been done. sorry about the confusion but thank you for the detailed response.

ken b - although i used a different kit to relocate my turnsigs, i am in the same boat you were in and i just needed to know what size/length bolts you used and if they were an HD part what the part# was. thanks.
