Hi, a rock caught my rear fender on the bottom edge and took a 1.25x3/8 chip out. Bare metal is now showing. It's mirage orange, what's the best way to repair/ Thanks. Ride Safe
Its too big for touch paint, hate to say it but sounds like a re-paint to me. Biggest chip I fixed with touch up was about pea size, (candy apple red) on the tank, took me hours.

Thanks man, that's what I was afraid of. Ride Safe
I have a similar chip on my rear fender...you can see it in the pic right to the left of the tail light. It's too big for touch up paint but I didn't want to get it repainted right now. I want to ride it. This might give you some reference though . . .
A friend of mine that works in a body shop showed me one of his tricks. He uses a small brush, toothpick or anything small and dabs in paint from a touch up bottle and fills in the chipped spot. Spot has to be rust free and clean. Make sure the paint does not need to be clear coated after application and put the paint only in the chipped hole.
Let it dry completely.
Fill again until it is a little higher than the regular paint.
Let it dry completely or the paint will curl.
Use 2000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a wooden paint stick (to keep the sandpaper flat). If the paint stick is warped put high side down. Sand out the high spot.
Then buff.
Be patient and watch what your doing. When your done you will barely notice it. Don't worry if the 2000 grit paper goes onto the clear coat a little, it should buff out OK.
Only do this if you fell you can. My first chip I was able to watch him do it and he made it look easy. But he's been doing this for ever. Good luck and only use this as a guide. I hate to see you wreck your paint job on a $20,000+ bike.
Go to your favorite auto paint store and get a half a pint of cheapo single stage paint mixed up. Use the back end of a paper match for a brush. Let it dry overnight and use polishing compound followed by wax to smooth the edges.
