So I have 7,000 miles on my 09 street bob and it is time for a new tire. I love the wide tire look but the SE 180 doens't last and I have heard the
night dragon doens't look as wide. So I am looking into a metzler 880 in a 170 and a couple others. Who has changed to a different tire and how does the width compare to the stock dunlop 160? Any info will help, thanks!
The Metz 170 is narrower then the stock 160 due to more round profile. Handles great but does not have that wide look you are after. I also had a 170 dunlop radial forget model at moment which was the same profile as the Metz 170 and handled the best but lasted only 5k miles.
As you most likely know you would have more options if you changed the rear wheel to a 5" width.
I asked the same question a while back, and another forum member suggested Dunlop GT 502s. I have no knowledge of this tire other than that suggestion.
I still haven't found a tire for me yet either, as I would like a wider one also. I've got 10k on mine, and will need a new one before Sturgis.
why not try the Metzler, it will look good. I found that the normal wear out is at about 8K. I had a SE 180 and it seemed to go about 10K and still had plenty of tread left on it. I ended up replacing mine because I got new wheels.
If you want performance and grip you will have to give up mileage. I like the performance and grip so 8K is ok with me (I go through 3 tires a year). I would say try the SE 180 again and see if the mileage is the same with the new tire. 7K seems low for mileage, but if it is the same on the new tire, you can try the Metzler's, but you might not get much more mileage. And the Metzler widths are spot on, so if you were running a 180 it will be a bit less in width that what you got now
I know I should change my rear rim width and I plan on doing that in a couple years along with some mods to go at least a 200 but for now I want wide and decent mileage.
