Default Best way to remove fork oil from rotor & brake pads?

My front fork leaked and sprayed oil on the rotor and eventually the pads after using the brakes. They are very weak now....

I wiped the rotor down both sides with brake cleaner but still weak...

Is it safe to spray the brake cleaner on the pads too? Will that do the trick or is there a better way/product to use?

Thanks in advance

You should be able to spray directly on the pads and wipe them down.

Just don't leave soak for any length of time or you run the risk of the pad separating from it's backing plate.

Don't recommend doing it on the bike though, un-bolt the caliper and remove the pads, clean them on a bench away from the bike.

OK I'll try a quick spray on the pads and wipe down tomorrow...

A non-foaming engine degreaser, rinse with water and then soak with brake cleaner and rinse again, no need to dismantle its quite safe to use.

If you wanna be fussy about it you can whip the caliper off the leg so you can spray the pads better.....takes more than brake cleaner to un-bond the pad material.

Brake or Contact cleaner is the ONLY way to clean the pads affectively in my book. You should remove the pads to clean them. Once you have them cleaned I'd "scuff" them llightly with some sand paper on a flat surface and spray them again. That's what I'd do!

Just an opinion though, but brakes come in quite handy when a blue haired bandit cuts you off.

+1 Brake Cleaner and Scuff Lightly, ONLY. I wouldn't use anything else

I would do off the bike for several reasons. First to keep from getting brake cleaner in wheel bearings or anywhere else. Second to be able to see if you're making a difference, and third access to scuff a bit.

Brake pads are like any other porous material. If they sit long enough in any liquid for it to invade it can degrade the bond between the pad and the glue. This is one reason most decent brake cleaners evaporate fairly quickly. Engine degreasers don't evaporate, that's why you have to wash them off.

I'd spend the bucks for new pads and install after the area is clean.

Thanks guys, I'll remove the caliper spray with brake cleaner and lightly sand as a few have suggested.

These pads are BRAND new I don't want to replace them, I'd have to order them from zanotti as they are the lyndall pads and local HD shop doesn't carry.
