I have a 99 FXD with stock headers and mufflers from a FXDWG (thanks to the previous owner and dealer). I'm looking to get a leaner look and some better sound, but I'm a cheap b%$^#d. Cycle Shack is too rich for my blood. If I had all the money in the world, I'd go V&H Short Shots - that's the look I want.
The J&P catalog has "Universal fit shorty mufflers" for under $30 each. Because I'm new to this and pretty ignorant, will someone tell me why this would be a bad idea?
To me those universal mufflers arent a bad idea...but I was cheaper than you, I modified my stock 09 SG mufflers to get a better, louder sound. And it was super easy to do!!

I checked out your posts.. I'm looking for a reversible option. Taking a hole saw to my muffler (considering I don't have a metal hole saw, or cutting fluid, or experience) is a bit drastic for me. If I don't like the sound or performance hit, I'm officially screwed.
Thanks for the idea, though. I'm also thinking about pulling the mufflers and drilling out the rivets. I HAVE rivets I can use to go back to "stock" if necessary.
I just got a set of Vance and Hines Straight Shots for $225. That's cheap in my book...
For those pipes, that IS cheap. As I said, though, I'm a cheap ... skate. If a different employment opportunity came along, I might be open to those. Don't hold them for me, though.
The only reason I drilled mine is because a friend gave me their stock mufflers they took off and wasnt afraid to mess mine up if I wasnt happy with the outcome. Honestly, mine sound way better than the Rush slip-ons she had put on her bike. Now if it looked as good as some shortshots or big radius VH pipes! lol
Something that MAY help here; I came accross a guy last weekend on a 2009 Fatbob that had what I thought were Rush slip ons but they were actually the stock exhaust. They were fairly noisy, but what he had done was strip the guts out of the stock pipes and put Big City Thunder Babbles in. He claimed they just bolted in and were $79. Kind of interesting and something to consider.
