For those of you that have had this happen, were there specific years that this situation is more prevalent or is it all Dynas. I do keep an eye on mine but am just wondering if it is something I should just change out as a precautionary measure.

Cheers,

Mine is a '07, but personally I think it's my own fault for not double-checking the dealer's work.

Normally I take my wheel off at home, run down to the dealer with the wheel and new rubber. Have them mount/balance and that's it. I install the wheels myself.

This time I was in a hurry getting ready for a big trip so I decided to just drop the bike off while I ran a few errands. The other bolt (left side) was all of 3/4 - 1 full turn away from tight. And the bottom left mount was loose as well.

Question...where might I obtain the spacer you are showing in this picture?

I broke one of the grade 8 bolts I had on my shocks a few years back. I replaced them with grade 7 bolts. Never had another problem. The grade 8 will shear where as the grade 7 will bend a long ways before breaking.

Mine broke a while ago.

I replaced them with these:

Don't have to deal with the allen or torx heads anymore either.

You may obtain one from a local Harley dealer...The part number I have is from an 06 parts book but I don't think there has been any change in them.
Part Number 54716-06

Check here for you year and model:

Default happens

This does happen regularly on this forum. I am by no means saying that this is something that happens on a single bike but it happens to many different riders here. Search for results. Reasons can be varied from poor shocks that can not handle the application to the above where the bolts are not checked for tightness, I do not believe under normal riding conditions (not jumping Snake River with Evil) that any bolt will shear unless your shocks have little/no resistance.

  • Check for tightness when maintaining your bike.
  • Check your shocks.

I broke one about three years ago on the way to Sturgis but I was way overloaded on heavy duty shocks and took a bad bounce on a frost heave on the interstate.

Last time around on this, I noticed the upper bushings were hammered out as well. Replaced all the bushings, new upper bolts (hex head vice torx) Haven't noticed a problem yet.
