Driving around today I noticed something that I don't think I have seen before. I was going towards a turn decelerating and when I changed gears down from 3'rd to 2'nd gear for just a moment the 6'th gear indicator lamp lighted up. It was actually while I still held the clutch, as soon as I released it and second gear was in the light extuinguished.
Don't fret. There's nothing wrong. The 6th gear light is switched-on by electronics. Its not switched by anything direct from the transmission. A computer matches the speed of the bike from the speedo pulse signal to the rpm of the engine. When the rpm is low enough when compared to the bike speed, the light is switched on.
Next time youre cruising along in 6 with that little green light shining, grab the clutch and rev the motor. You will see the little light go out. Since your rpm is spinning too fast for the current speed of the bike, the computer says "hey, this ain't 6 gear" and shuts the light off.
Several aftermarket add-on gear indicators work the same way. I kinda wish HD had a different system, as with the BMWs, that tell precisely every gear you have selected without relying on this rpm/bike speed comparison.
6th gear is great on montana hwys . Works great at 80 mph all day long. thanks for the information leafman. I would have just figured it was another harley electrical gremlin. (older dynas are famous for that ) . Dont ask me why I know LOL.
