Wow - Yep that pretty much says it all - Wow. So now I have a thousand questions, as continue to setup and mod my 07 fatboy:
- It's easy to overpack, but why eliminate the saddlebags, I would think they are best solution, because they have the lowest center of gravity.
- What tankbag are you guys using?
- My windvest should be delivered today; just too much effort at 75-85 for long periods of time. I do like putting my feet on the passenger pegs and lean forward onto my thieghs. Tonight, I'm installing Kury rear peg offsets, will drop and move the pegs back 2" in both directions, should be much more comfortable and I hope still clear bags.
- I have and love the Kury Ergo Higway bar. Lets me put my feet up, but easy to keep them tucked in close to the bike, on the rubber and feet stay there no problem.
- The bike has the H-D easy reach seat, which I like, but feels pretty hard after about an hour. Think I have settled on getting a Saddleman Explorer with a backrest to replace.
- What is a good method to determine the "proper" riser height. I know the answer is what feels good, but there must be a general guideline to start with. Obviously, I have to pick a seat first and then can mock up in handlebars in garage with 2x4s, etc. but not the same as riding for a while to really see.

Cheers, Kevin.

You're on the right track. Do whatever you think will make it comfortable for you. I took way too much with me, next time I'll take 1/2. My brother heard an idea, get old clothing from the thrift store, and throw each day's away. Your load lightens as you go. (I hadn't heard that one before)
I personally don't need a radio or sound system. GPS's make you a prisoner, and take all the fun out of it IMO. I made a few wrong turns but found my way through without backtracking. Got to see stuff I'd of never would've otherwise.

Just do whatever you think and enjoy the heck out of it.

Touring and exploring on a dirtbike in the Andes I had to learn a few things about traveling light and some of the main things I'd do to limit my pact to about a square foot worth of junk was ....

One set of street clothes made of a some synthetic that will handwash and dry within a couple hours or easily overnight, Fold& Roll and they come out of the bag with no wrinkles

Ziploc bag to keep things separated (smells/liquids and associated possible leaks) and they can also be mashed down to get air out and sealed making the volume of clothes smaller.

one pair of shoes/sandals...they need to pack light and be versatile enough that I could use them for most occassions

OLD Socks/Underwear.... the ones I should throw away.. give the old socks one last ride and then give them a proper burial in a motel rooms trash can. load gets smaller as you travel

Other ... Souvenir T-Shirts .. Pick up a few as you travel and you have a fresh shirt for a day they can replace the socks you are throwing away.

ANY luggage that you have that has an expansion zipper on it starts the trip Zipped-Up so you have a little space to add crap that we tend to pickup along the way... got to bring something back to the family

Very small overnight kit that has just the basics, the little one dollar sample sizes are perfect. Limit this to what you can put in a regular sandwich sized Ziploc

Someone asked about What Tankbag people are using ... mines a Cortech, can't tell what model. It's well designed with handy places for todays common "Neccesities". Haven't noticed any scratching, try and keep the bottom of it clean
