Swaping out a gas tank..help.
Any advise, tips, warnings?
Can I use one from any year?
Wide Glide? Only a Super Glide tank will work?
Thanks.
First, check out a parts guide like worldofpowersports.com and get yourself a service manual.
I think, fuel tank wise, that all Dynas of the same model year are pretty much the same. But, if I understood your post, you are replacing a lot more than the tank - you'd be doing the guages, console, ignition switch, etc. I am sure it can be done. Nevertheless, these two resources and searching here will tell you pretty much everything you need to know.
Second, be prepared to spend some money on little stuff. Connectors, bolts, gaskets aren't cheap and - at least for me - added up pretty quickly. If you haven't yet, try a place like Zanotti's for parts if you need HD parts. If you can, look elsewhere. My local dealer charged me $3 each for 2pin connectors. Then I found them in the Drag Specialties catalog for $1.75 for 5 of them.
When you do the tank, the crossover tube is the tricky part. I didn't think about this until too late, but don't do what he manual says and disconnect it. Even if you are careful, gas goes everywhere. Use Vice Grips or something and clamp off both ends next to the tank and cut the tube in the middle. You'll spill only the gas in the tube. Replace the whole crossover tube when you put on the next tank. You can get 3' of 1/4" fuel line hose at Home Depot for $5. Very worth it.
Hope this helps.
I opted for the wide-glide look (the big speedo). Check out my album (bottom row second pic from the left) has a detail of the custom harness I put together so it plugs right into the stock dyna harness at the neck.

I had to rewire the dash lights, but was able to reuse my stock FXDI speedo in the Street Bob Dash ....
It cost me about $400 all in ... got a lot of the parts from Zanotti for about a 20-25% savings over retail ....

I have an '08 FXDF Fat Bob and have been looking for the part number for rubber tube with self adhesive backing that sticks inside the rear fender that you run the wires through.
For some of the years, the part isn't even shown on the diagram. For others, its lists the price as $189 - appears this is for 50 feet. The part is listed for other models, but the description and picture don't match up. For 2009, the FXDF is listed as "2009 FXDF Fat Boy". ??
A lot of times the part you want will be in the diagram with a number next to it, but the part doesn't show in the list below the diagram so you can add it to your cart. Take a look at other models and other years. I eventually found what I was looking for as a part for a 2006 Street Glide.

Since I have an 05 Super Glide plain gas tank, I assume the Super Glide custom tank should work? Perhaps this will make installation much easier.
Id buy ur old tank if ur looking to dump it
