Default Swaping out a gas tank..help.

I have a 2005 Dyna Superglide and would like to swap out the gas tank with one that has the speedo and tach on the gas tank.

Any advise, tips, warnings?
Can I use one from any year?
Wide Glide? Only a Super Glide tank will work?

Thanks.

I just finished putting a new tank on. First time every really working on my bike, but it wasn't that hard.

First, check out a parts guide like worldofpowersports.com and get yourself a service manual.

I think, fuel tank wise, that all Dynas of the same model year are pretty much the same. But, if I understood your post, you are replacing a lot more than the tank - you'd be doing the guages, console, ignition switch, etc. I am sure it can be done. Nevertheless, these two resources and searching here will tell you pretty much everything you need to know.

Second, be prepared to spend some money on little stuff. Connectors, bolts, gaskets aren't cheap and - at least for me - added up pretty quickly. If you haven't yet, try a place like Zanotti's for parts if you need HD parts. If you can, look elsewhere. My local dealer charged me $3 each for 2pin connectors. Then I found them in the Drag Specialties catalog for $1.75 for 5 of them.

When you do the tank, the crossover tube is the tricky part. I didn't think about this until too late, but don't do what he manual says and disconnect it. Even if you are careful, gas goes everywhere. Use Vice Grips or something and clamp off both ends next to the tank and cut the tube in the middle. You'll spill only the gas in the tube. Replace the whole crossover tube when you put on the next tank. You can get 3' of 1/4" fuel line hose at Home Depot for $5. Very worth it.

Hope this helps.

I have an 01 and was going to do the same thing. You'll need a low-rider setup (tank and console, and some basic wiring skills). Low rider and wide glide tanks differ under the console - to accommodate the different console.

I opted for the wide-glide look (the big speedo). Check out my album (bottom row second pic from the left) has a detail of the custom harness I put together so it plugs right into the stock dyna harness at the neck.

I'mma chick and it was pretty straightforward taking it off and putting it back on. However, the **** i didn't care for was getting the fuel pump out of the tank and into the new one. Spent an hour or so on that part and got frustrated, or rather, a little scared i'd tear it up, and took it to an indy to put the fuel pump in the new tank.

I swapped out a Low Rider take-off tank I got from an e-Bay seller and installed a new Street Bob console ... you could use the OEM parts finder on Ronnie's HD website to identify the parts you'll need (you have to add them to your cart to see the part numbers) ....

I had to rewire the dash lights, but was able to reuse my stock FXDI speedo in the Street Bob Dash ....

It cost me about $400 all in ... got a lot of the parts from Zanotti for about a 20-25% savings over retail ....

Just something I noticed about the OEM parts finders SURFOR Chop and I talked about - they are pretty good, but sometimes you have a play around with them a bit to find what you need.

I have an '08 FXDF Fat Bob and have been looking for the part number for rubber tube with self adhesive backing that sticks inside the rear fender that you run the wires through.

For some of the years, the part isn't even shown on the diagram. For others, its lists the price as $189 - appears this is for 50 feet. The part is listed for other models, but the description and picture don't match up. For 2009, the FXDF is listed as "2009 FXDF Fat Boy". ??

A lot of times the part you want will be in the diagram with a number next to it, but the part doesn't show in the list below the diagram so you can add it to your cart. Take a look at other models and other years. I eventually found what I was looking for as a part for a 2006 Street Glide.

Wide Glides have the Speedo on the tank and are an easy swap. The Low Riders have both the Speedo and tach. As far as the actual gas tank mounts go, the 1996-2005 will all work. Its the speedo's that are different from year to year. I "think" you need 04-05 for the speedo to work without changing anything. I have been contemplating going to the larger Wide Glide tank myself just to get that extra gallon of gas, and because for some reason used Low Rider tanks bring a premium. I'd like to recap as much as I can if I do the swap by selling my old tank. Best of luck with the project.

The fuel injected Low Rider and Street Bob tank are the same ... I used the Street Bob dash with the Low Rider tank so I could reuse my speedometer and not have to worry about adding the tach ... was on a budget ... and frankly don't see all that much benefit from a tach for my riding (street use only, no drag strip usage) ....

These are all great tips. I have decided to go for the gas tank that only has the speedo.

Since I have an 05 Super Glide plain gas tank, I assume the Super Glide custom tank should work? Perhaps this will make installation much easier.
