grinding/rubbing while bottoming

This is a tricky one. 1993 FX DWG. When I have it loaded with lots of gear and my girlfriend and we hit a bump there is a grinding/rubbing sound when we bottom out. This sounds really bad - not just a bottoming of the shock. Originially this happened when I was missing one front motor mount bolt and the other came loose. I could fix it by tightening this bolt just a tad - maybe 1/8" when it came loose. Now its back but that mount is intact. Any ideas? When I had the original repair they said my trans spline was shot. Could this have anything to do with it? Btw there does not appear to be any rubbing on the tires or drive belt.

not to be a smartass but, maybe you have your bike overloaded.... you shouldn't be bottoming it out....

Your shocks are either shot, too short or you need to crank up the preload.

okay - poor choice of words. I do not believe the bike is bottoming. I do not believe I have a problem with my shocks. Tightening the engine mount solved the problem. Something is rubbing and its metallic sounding. I don't think my shocks are fully compressed when this happens. Bad shocks are not cured by tightening the motor mount 1/8". Thats why this is a tricky one. Sorry I used the word bottoming...
