I've got an '08 Fat Bob with mid-mount controls and I need to replace the shaft that the shifter is attached to because the knurling has been eaten away. Nowadays, the shifter just spins around it, thus the bike is unridable. I've scoured my service manual to no avail...nothing tells me what this part is so I could get a replacement. From what I can tell, it won't be a terribly tricky operation to swap it out once I get the part.
From the '010 Parts Manual (pretty sure your '08 uses the same part) ; #34621-06 Shift lever/shaft, Mid Controls.
Replacing that shifter shaft might be a little work, though, as the shaft comes with the lever that sits behind the inner primary cover, and I think you'll have to pull both the outer and inner primary covers (and all the stuff in between!) to replace the shifter shaft. Before you do all that you might want to take one more look at the teeth on both the shifter shaft and on the shift lever itself to determine for sure which one needs replacing. Hope you get it worked out.

Your shifter had to have come loose to make this occur and normally the metal of the shafts is a lot harder than the lever so if it does come loose the lever gets chewed up and not the shaft
My 06 street bob is going in the shop thursday for the same thing. I had the dealer order the part last week so it wouldn't be just sitting there waiting on part. I've been riding mine for over a week with a pair of vise grips for a shifter arm. Looks pretty FU but it works,
and yes you have to pull the primary to replace the part. Since they are going to be in there I'm having them replace IPB and check the Stator an rotor. Good Luck
