So prior to the actual release, there was a lot of speculation of the 2012's coming out with the 103 engines. One point of concern seemed to be the heat in the rear cylinder of the engine.
HD seems to have addressed this issue with Engine Idle Temperature Management Strategy...
I haven't looked at the what Harley is doing about the 103 but they have had a programed function that turns the fuel off on the rear cylinder of the bagger models if they idle over a certain amount of time. You can have this programed into at least the 2009 Dyna models, for a price.
In my 2011 dyna owners manual it says HD will turn it on for free by doing a re-flash of the ECM to turn it on for no charge. I never had mine turned on but am considering it.
I know it can be done on the 08's. I had it done to see it would would help correct issues I was having with drive ability. It was in fact a better download which eliminated the low surge issue and netted better throttle response. When the head temp sensor reaches a certain temp, it shuts down the rear cylinder. The first time I experienced activation of rear cylinder shut down at a stop light in the heat of day, the engine acts like you have a bad plug, more or less a rough idle effect. What I didn't like was, at launch, it stumbles then kicks back in. Sorry, I didn't like that hesitation at all, especially if your in a emergency situation and you need gas now! That stumble could be enough to get you hit!. I had the dealer flash the stock program back in. But that's all irrelevant now..
I just wanna know if there are any long term effects. For example: in V8's which "turn off" 2 cylinders, 2 of them don't stop working, it changes the firing cycle so all 8 still fire, just in a different order, so the wear on the engine is even. What's gonna happen to your bike in 5, 10, 30 years, if the wear isn't even. I know it's only while you idle, but you never know the effects until they happen

It shouldn't effect anything, the engine still gets lube, it doesn't kick in until it hits that high temp, and it's a high temp! so, you may not know it's happened at all unless your sitting in traffic for some time. As for life of the motor, I doubt the bike will last 30 years anyway LOL.

On the touring bikes, you can manually activate at will by rolling the throttle forward.
