Default Changing Dyna Fat Bob Derby Cover Question

I bought a Willie G. Skull derby cover for my husband's Fat Bob and went to install it as a surprise.

Put his bike stand on a block of wood to get it as upright as I could, but when I unbolted the original derby cover, about 1/4 cup of fluid came out immediately.

I quickly bolted it back on.

I will have to have him hold the bike up while I change it. I'll probably have to replace that 1/4 cup of fluid.

I bought Formua One, but looking through his bike's service manual I can't find exactly where I will be putting the fluid in.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Just change the cover and top up the tranny fluid when you're done - peasy.

Use a funnel and pour it right back in the edge of where the derby cover bolts on. The other option is to go ahead and swap the cover out then pull the inspection cover ( left of the derby cover) and add the fluid back in through there.

If the bike was close to upright, it may have had to much fluid in it.
It is full when the fluid reaches the bottom of the clutches with the bike sitting straight up.

I almost, and I say almost wish my wife would bolt stuff on my bike when I'm not around.
I say almost because she is not very mechanical. Unlike you

I honestly would just change the fluid at the same time. If I remember correctly its only one quart anyway. Also you actually fill it in the hole the derby cover seals closed. If its a dyna which I am guessing it is it one quart tranny, one quart primary, three quarts engine just an fyi. Good Luck

I wouldn't worry too much about the fluid that spilled out I'm guessing its pretty minimal. But if you do want to top it off just pour it right back into the derby cover opening ... make sure you use the same fluid that's already in there. When the bike is upright the level is supposed to be just above the bottom of your clutch.

Depending on the year newer dynas actaully do not have any inspection hole. Not really sure why but they dont gotta put it in the derby hole.

Mines a 06 and you fill it through the derby cover opening. There's a little notch in the inside at the bottom that you can fit a smaller funnel into. If you placed the stand on a block of wood and it still ran out it was probably over full. I change mine with the stand on the ground and I can get a full 32 oz in there and it is even with the bottom of the opening.

I just asked the dealer about installing the derby cover and they said to have some one lean the bike over and just change the cover that way. You shouldn't lose too much fluid with the bike leaned way over but you do risk dropping it.......or just wait until you have to change the fluid anyway. My dealer is putting the derby cover on for free when they change out my fluid

Because there is nothing to inspect and no adjustment to be made.

Primary fluid, not tranny
