I had a bike go down while I was parking it. Lost footing in dark. Lemme tell you. I escaped a dented primay, tank, and busted ankle. The bike.was 650 lbs plus, and I could still muscle it up by the bars. I am 5'7" and no bodybuilder. But the engine guard saved my nite. It all depends how lucky you feel and whether you are strong enough to keep ot from the point of no return.

I agree with Mysterycruiser, my son has a 2011 Street Glide and he was hit by a car that made a U turn in front of him, and as he tried to manouver out of the way of the car, it broad sided him, as it struck the Highway bars, saving his leg from major damage and he was also able to keep the bike upright. His bike was damaged, but he walked away without a scratch. So, the Highway bars/engine guard was a savior.

i run them on all my bikes..
i recently laid my bike down at a pretty good speed, and it saved the motor/trans/shifter/brake pedal from ANY damage...
i'm sold on them!!

I think highway bars help more than hinder. To me they serve a similar function like Bark Busters on off-road race bikes. The Bark Busters protect your hands when slapping against trees and the hand shields mounted to them save your hands from tossed up rocks. For the most part they are a great thing to have, that is until you go over the bars and they trap your hands and snap your wrists.

As to the highway bars, I see them as having way more advantages than disadvantages. I'd rather walk away from an accident than worry if the bars are going to damage the bike.

A former co-worker was a passenger behind her husband as they were riding their Harley Dresser down a puddle filled dirt road on their way to a campground. Doing about 5 MPH and trying to steer around a puddle, the bike slipped on the slope and fell over breaking her ankle in three places. Her husband had a crash bar to protect him, but she had the bike pin her down and snap her ankle.

Are you talking about the desert dawg rain guards? I'm about to pull the trigger on a set, just waiting for this weeks paycheck. How do you like them?
re desert dawgs rain guards... I have them on both the harleys.. wind and wx protection is the main reason... but should you not need them, say summer wx, then they roll up and take very little room in your kit. Pockets are handy for tire gage and snack bars but they sure keep the bugs off the chaps :) Go for them... if you ride beyond the city limits, you'll appreciate them for sure....

If I was to install an engine guard, it would be the Lindby mustache type....A little better looking, to me anyway....

I have the HD black engine guard on my 11' Wide Glide and I don't mind it at all.

I've wanted a Black Lindby Linbar for about 18 months (http://www.lindbycustom.com/cart/home.php?cat=258). I don't want to pay full price so I'm waiting it out on eBay and here. Eventually, I'll have one.
