i have seen this done with a bottle jack and torches in the past. why are you trying to open them up? how wide do you need to go?
JRK, i need them about 1/4" wider. Or 1/8 on each side. The reason is because i tossed a 5.5" wheel and 200 under there and there is a small contact point (where the signals mount to the fender) that rub the outside of the radial wheel when i hit bumps.
Now JRK, i know you aren't a fan of the 200 conversion, but its looks F'n sweet and the radial is much for my style of riding, so we can agree to disagree on that point.
So ya think just put a torch on each end near where it mounts to the frame and crank it open and let it sit there for a bit until the metal has cooled? won't they just bend right back in?
One of the guys from the FL Dyna group had a shop cut each strut in two places towards the shock mounting point.
Each cut was part-way through the strut so the strut could be bent out. Each cut was then welded to fill in the gap, then the second cut was made, bent and filled.
I think I have that right anyway......
Hopefully whoever it was will see your post and chime in. I saved a picture of it but havin a hard time locating it. I'll keep digging.

thats not a bad idea! thanks man! now to hunt down a welder...
As long as you are widening the struts 1/4", you might consider going with a wider 8.5" rear fender. That way the tire will be able to go full stroke without interference. My stock rear fender measured 8.25" at the struts.
