I hope to get the stuff together in the next few weeks and get them put on. Just holding them up to the bike and sitting on the seat, they seem about perfect for me for arm position and reach with the stock risers. I hope I can squeeze a few inches more riser in if I want more rise later without having to buy all new cables again.

i'm a hair shy of 6'3" and have 16" narrow apes on 3" risers. So effectively, about 18", with standard 1" risers.

I dig the look of the narrow apes. They are just a little wider than the stock 10" mini apes. The thing i don't like about he wide apes is the base of the bar, they jut out way past the forks in the triple trees, looks bad IMO. Having said that, I've never ridden a bike w/ the wide apes, so can't compare that to the handling of my narrows.

I love the narrows though! Sig pic has the apes

OH! also, the narrow works better aesthetically w/ the bike (again, IMO) because of the skinny front tire. Its got that long racked out front w/ a skinny tire. The bigger wider apes look pretty decent on Fatboy / Fatbobs.

I did go w/ 1.25" thick bars, and they are great. I def wouldn't go w/ any 1" bars. 1.5" might look sick too!

Post pics when you get it all done

I was thinking of taking the settlement money whenever I receive it and putting it towards a set of taller apes than the stock mini-apes currently on the bike. I'm torn on whether to go narrow or wide and how tall to go. I'm currently thinking 16" rise, since I'm 6'2", but 14" might work, too. I like the look of both the narrow and the wide apes and can't decide which one I like better.

Any difference in handling characteristics / comfort between going wide or narrow?

If you've got 'em, please post pics of apes on a 99-05 WG along with the brand and rise.
Check out Carlini. A little pricey, but I love mine. They're the Carlini Evil Apes... Check out my profile pic.

Not sure what you mean by wide apes but my first set were wider at their base than my trees. The unsymmetricalness (yeah I know it's not a word) of it drove me crazy. When I had a chance to swap them for the same height, I made sure to pay attention to the base width.

I do like the fat apes (1.25"+ thick tubing). It flows well with the fatter front end (49mm as opposed to the older 41mm). The thicker tubing also allows for easier internal wiring which is something I wanted to stay with, regarding stock setup.

As for height, I'm 6'1" and run 16's on top of 1.5" tall risers, for a total rise of 17.5". My hands are at shoulder level and I find the riding position very comfortable.

If you want to keep the stock WG risers, you'll need 1.25" bars that DO NOT stepdown to 1" at the risers. Most fat handlebars do step down. Otherwise you'll need to swap out the risers too.

While you're at it, make sure you replace the stock rubber bushings with poly bushings. The rubber bushings coupled with the height of the 16's, will cause the bars to sway forward and back more than you'd like.

If you are unsure, remember you can always swap them out for different height/style of bars. They are not permanent.

I've seen 1.50" carlinis on a forum member's fat boy and those things rock!
