how many shift patterns was they for the left side shift triumphs and what was they.... know this a harley site but i know if you own a harley then more than likely you own an old triumph just saying
I don't know about the Triumphs but I can tell you that a Norton Commando has the shifter on the right and the rear brake on the left. That will screw you up if your not really thinking about it.
My Triumph Daytona had a left side shifter. The problem is that I owned it in the 60's and have don't have a lot of memories of things back then, but I seem to recall it was first gear up and the rest down. I'm sure someone here who has led a more responsible life will chime in on this and correct me if needed.
I think that's it. But it WAS on the right side. The post about the Norton reminded me that my Norton was the same- right side shift with first up, 3 down. That was really confusing then. Obviously it's still confusing even now.
Before 1975, Nortons were right side shift, one up, three down. Triumphs were right side shift, one down, three up. I have a 1974 Norton 850 Commando that I bought new.
Wish my Dyna T-Sport shifted that way. 1974 was the last good year. In 1975 everyone had to conform to the Jap bikes way of thinking.
My dad used to have an old 250 Sprint. It was a 3 speed. You pulled in the clutch, and rotated the entire assembly to change gears. That was fun trying to get used to.
I had a Triumph Booneville back in 1971 that was Right Shifter..
I believe it was 1 up and 3 down..
You know the first Sportsters where Right Shifter !!
I was watching the movie " Then Came Bronson " and noticed him shifting with his right foot..
Couldn't believe it so I looked it up..

So did the XR750s. Since they were always turning left, the put the shifter on the right side so they shift up or down as needed. Evel's jump bikes were this way also.
