I sold my sporty and took a chance on a 1997 FXD with 12000 miles on her for $3500.
The bike has only had about 200 miles on it in 10 yrs. It is at my local shop getting new tires, carb. Cleaned out and checked over for any other issues. Also getting some drag bars added and the mid gear shift spline removed.
I have ridden a 2011 fat bob and was wondering how much the ride will differ on the 1997 model? I did not ride this one as it would not start, like I said I took a chance on this one.
The '97 has an 80" Evo motor whereas the '11 Fat Bob is sporting a 96" Twin Cam ... so, compared to the FXDBF the FXD will feel a little anemic ...
... having said that though, I'll admit it may not that noticeable (I borrowed a friend's Evo Softail with the same motor and it was a good ride) ...
There have been a couple of minor changes in the frame (in '99 and again in '06) ... the big difference will probably be the 19" front tire on the FXD as compared to the 16" balloon tire on the Fat Bob ... I find the bigger balloon tire gives a better, more stable ride ....
If you've been riding a Sportster, I think the transition to the FXD will be fine ... I think you made a good find the low-miles Evo FXD ....
Damn.. what a GREAT deal! I would have bought it too (assuming I had the $$$). Enjoy your new scoot man! Those evo motors last forever from what I hear.
Sounds like a great deal on a nice motorcycle. I think you'll enjoy it. Sure, it will be different from both your Sporty and the Fatbob but you will enjoy it just the same.
Nice score! You cant lose with that bike! As long as you dont get too carried away with mods, you will always be able to get your money back out of it. Oh, and it will be a night and day difference than your sporty!
I bought a 1997 FXD around this time last year. At that price you can have a killer bike for very little investment! I have less than $10k in mine now, pics are in my sig. Here is a link to my build up, https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...yna-build.html
Man, now I wish I could find another for that price!!

Just finished you build thread and your bike looks great! I'll get some pics up of mine when it gets back from the shop. All stock at this point except for a couple of things. I will most likely keep it stock with some minor changes just to make it "mine". If it rides as well as some say they do and I keep it long term then I will sink some money in it.
