I was thinking of repainting my tins in a matte black, but didn't know if I would get bored with it in a year and want vivid black. I was then driving behind a Ford Edge today that had flat black vinyl wrap on it. It looked pretty good and followed the contours well. Has any one used this on their bike at all? If it works, it could be a good under $50 mod.
I imagine it would actually hold up pretty well. Our shop truck was completly wrapped 6 years ago and it still looks great; including around the gas door where I personally have spilled some. It'd be a fun, cheap way of trying a new scheme. Let us know if you go for it.
I can get a 5'x4' sheet of 3M matte black for $60. I think if I took the tank off of the bike, it would make it a lot easier to do. I wanted to paint it this winter, but I think I will try this instead. They also have matte white, matte gray and matte graphite. I might be able to cut out my own tank lettering. A small sheet starts at $20. It's worth a try, but it won't be until the cold weather hits. Saw it here. http://www.stickercity.com/3M-Matte-...ticker-Sheets/
Do it up, I've thought about this in the past and would like to see if it works. Not sure if it would conform to the front of the tank without wrinkles.
The heat is enough to burn my thigh at times, so that is a concern. I've seen it on Harleys on some companies sites that do this though. It's not that much money though, so it's worth a shot.
I have done some wraps on cars, the best advice I can give you is do it is a dust free environment. Take the time to set it up and mix a bottle of soap and water together the mix ratio of that for window tint. Also, I would have a blow dryer handy to help dry the solution as you squeegee out the film. Plus the heat will soften the vinyl. DO NOT use a heat gun, another lesson I learned the hard way, lol
I prefer to do it this way then to try and apply it all sticky. I have ruined a few pieces of vinyl this way, lol Matter of fact, I just helped my neighbor do his hood on his Mach 1 Mustang, came out really well.
Good luck and post some pics of it as you go along.
