Personally I a little biased - but 01 and 02 are the best "old ones".
As mentioned - Forged crank (so no need to weld the crank I'm guessing if you want to goose the motor).
Cam tensioners are a crap shoot - I'm around 20k+ and they look fine.
03 - I think they changed the crank and went with a pressed unit. And a buddy complains about the heads on his 05 - something with valve guides.- Always something.
Still trying to figure out whats different between 01 and 02 - I think its the pivot bolt thru the tranny that holds the swing arm. I think the 02's are a bit heftier. Again no need to worry unless your prone to daily hole shots.
BTW if you like the heavy front end (49mm forks and mid-glide trees) of the newer models - the whole unit bolts right in.
I have always loved the Dyna FXDX It was one of the best dynas ever made. Wish id have bought one way back when.
I was able to pick mine up for a very reasonable price. It's an '01. I believe the reason why the '02 is the best year is because it is last year for better crank and bearings, but the first year for the improved swing arm. My '01 was only $5600 and is in excellent condition. 15,900 miles and never seen rain. I just took my time and kept looking.
I love my '05...though admittedly I don't have EFI...or 6th gear...or a bigger motor....or wider forks...or the same multitude of parts available for the more recent years.
