Default My FLD apes are killin me

Well, thought my shoulders were ok with the 12.5" chubby apes after I got used to them and i really thought i was. But today we did a pretty good run in the mountains and i was trashed. I literally limped home draggin my old-*** arm to my side.

Until i actually get a joint replacement, I gotta stay out of any long run with twisties. That sux...i like the mountains! I've had both shoulders cut and left one was front labrum and back rotator cuff...that's the one that's draggin now...lol.

Ok, now I'm in the market for bars again, damn. Looking for something along the lines of the 2011 cvo softail bars. I gotta stay about 36" over over on the width and no more than 10" tall. Like the fat z-bar look but want the bottom to be rounded to match fld front end. Any ideas?

How about some good ol' classic beach bars ...?

I haven't had joint replacement or anything ... but, I have found the 'mini apes' comfortable on the twisty roads and the super slab alike ... I'm 6'4" so might be a difference in physiology / anatomy ....

Good luck finding something that works ... no good riding in pain ... gotta get it right or you might not spend as much time in the saddle ....

You should look into some pullback risers and urethane bushings. My guess is that they would make a world of difference for you.

Riding a Heritage.2007. I have problems with both shoulders and back.

Stock bars with 6" pullback risers. Put things right where I wanted them.

I've never been able to figure out how anybody can ride with those things! I put some Rivco risers on my stock bars and they are perfect!

I got to tell yah I’m a 100% ape guy, however the stock FLD bars a so dang comfortable.
Yes for me they could be a hair wider to make an exact fit.

Actually the stock bars also fit the overall stance of the bike real nice.

You ride what you find comfy, and I'll ride with my 16's and be just as comfy.

I had the 10" OEM mini apes for bout a year. They were ok, but just didn't really suit me on long rides either. I had ridden drag bars on risers when I was younger so I tried some 31" wide, 10" high Tbars. I love um, way more comfortable than the apes. You hand positions are different and the arm twists different. Feel like I have more controll. My arms are so long I kinda wished I had just gotten 8" high ones but the 10" are still very comfortable, just my arms are bent some where I kinda like havin um straightened out a bit.

Yes, positioning of wrists is as important as the height and the width. It ALL ties together. Guys, don't get old! lol...Apes wasn't a fashion statement for me it's where I thought i wanted my hands and arms. Now I too think that flattening out my hands will relieve my shoulder joints. To illustrate, hold hands out in riding position and twist them. Feel how the dynamics in shoulder joint chages dramatically as you do. As I rotate out with inside of hand, i put different pressure on shoulders. I can see how that drag bar does that for you and the riser takes them to right height. I looked at some old pics of one of my past bikes and one of the most comfortable ever for me was when I had 6" risers (straight) and 6" z-bars with a fairly flat angle. I'm staying at this for a while and try to build up muscles around shoulders in case it's just conditioning. Doc says no but I have a feeling (hope) that's a big part of it. Time will tell.
