Default sand or no sand????

im looking to use VHT high heat wrinkle paint on my primary cover, i have a 2010 FXD with the gray finished motor. my question is do i have to sand the cover before i prime and paint it because it has the rough texture on it already? or do i just clean it real good, prime & shot? thanks guys

I would scuff it up with a red scotch brite pad.

Paint is all about the prep. work. You will be much happier with the results if you dry/wet sand of some sort before you prime and paint. It will adhere and look better and last longer. Also, keep it as clean as humanly possible for best results.

I used it on my battery cover and electrical cover, I just used a scotch brite pad to scuff it up. I didn't like how it turned out so I did a second coat right over the first one and it came out really nice.

If you don't want to mess with scuffing, clean whole area to be painted with M.E.K (methyl ethyl ketone) you can pick it up at Home Depot or Lowes, use gloves when using it, this stuff will take off any and all dirt, grease etc. i painted the engine on my old bagger, i used M.E.K to clean the engine than painted it, it came out great, the paint held up really good, i sold it 7 years later and it still looked good.

I agree with art. MEK is quite agressive. It's awesome for removing contaminants.

+1 on the M.E.K. and precautions. Also might want to think about a self-etching epoxy/polimide primer. (Good Stuff)

Best wishes....Tim(HT)
