Ok time to show my complete Harley noob-ness lol...
From the time I bought this bike ('09 FXD) a month ago it has had this.. Im guessing what you guys are calling a decel pop. Basically what others here in the south refer to as "racking the pipes" ...
Not a backfire ... just a sort of rumbling "pop pop pop pop pop..." under decel or downshift situations..
Was told by the dealer that the pipes were aftermarket and they dont seem to have baffles so I assumed this was normal? ... In my reading here and other places Im starting to get the idea that is not the case and its showing a lean condition... Note that the A/C is stock. Havnt checked the plug color yet but I will after my trip home on the morning.
Please advise... If this is and issue that needs to be addressed I'll have my dealer do it ASAP.
If you are running pipes with open or no baffles, you need to get that stock a/c out of there. Get a high flo filter; screamin eagle, k&n, ness....once you do that, go for a ride and run the throttle out. Your ecu will recal/some people say "adjust" and you should either not hear it at all, or just a tiny bit.
Just remember suck, blow. You can only suck so much with a restricted filter, and your pipes wanna blow with no baffles - give it the air it needs to blow.
A properly tuned engine should not produce any decel popping. Decel popping usually indicates a lean condition, intake leaks, leaking exhaust gaskets and/or leaking slip joints between muffler and head pipe. Check all those for leaks first, seal the muffler slip joints with HiTemp RTV sealant and if she still pops, blame the state of tune.
