Default Went and Did It- 95" upgrade

Well, after much reading these boards and hundres of threads, speaking to 4 dealers and independent shops and getting as many quotes and recommendations, I finally bit the bullet and had a big bore kit installed this week. My first thought was "Why didn't you do this a year ago?" The quick answer to that is $$$$$. Here's what was done:

SE Big Bore Cylinders
SE HC Forged Pistons
SE 251 Cam
Stock heads, ported, set squish area
New SE valve seals and springs
SE Pushrods
SERT

When all was done, it's running at 10.5:1 CR and has dyno'd out at 96.9 Hp and 104.6 Ft. lbs. Tq. Runs like a rocket, regular 93 octane pump gas and no pinging. Best of all, the dealer that did the work will honor the balance of the base warranty as they did the engine work. 3 other dealers who gave me quotes all said any work for a 95" BB would void the factory warranty. Dealer that did the work told me they wouldn't be much of a dealer if they didn't warrant an engine that they built, I liked that attiude.

The bike is very civil on the road, accelerates like no one's business and has a high smile factor.

If anyone's looking into getting this done, I would highly recommend it with one additional thought, talk to your builder and get an opinion as to how you ride and what you're realistically looking to get out of a BB build. High HP and Tq figures may look great, but don't always translate into a civil bike. Drag racing builds are a whole lot different than a good street performer that still serves as a reliable daily ride. Just my (happy) observations.

VERY good information and suggestions, it's nice to hear of a good dealer that wants to work with you instead of against you. Sounds like a good running bike.

I know what you're saying Dave. I finally looked at it like the decision to have kids, if you wait until you can afford it, it'll never get done. Kids, bike, mortgage, house payments, just another dent in the paycheck. Low-interest credit card for an extra few months helps also. At least I paid for most of it by cash.

Cound not stress the importance of the right dealer or independent shop more. The build was not done at the shop closest to home, hell, there's one under 5 miles away. Standing by your work is something I went out of my way for and if it cost a few bucks more than a cheapo upgrade, I got what I paid for. Plus, I get to sell all of the old parts and recoup a few hundred bucks, win-win in my way of looking at it.

Ride safe.

Hay,

Sounds great! I'll probably end up there next year......[&:]

Curious, did you use a PC III for tuning? The local guys here download the stage I re-cal to raise the redline up, and then use a PC to fine tune it.

Did you re-work your stock heads, or buy another set already done?

Joe,

The Power Commander is for EFI bikes, mine is carbed. I used the Screaming Eagle Race Tuner to set up the spark and timing advance. Stock heads were reworked, ported and squish area set, new valve seats and SE springs, original valves were used. The cost of having the stock head redone was a real savings over either the SE HTCC heads or the HTCC ported heads that were about $650.00 and $1300.00 respectively. After the fine tuning with the SERT, the redline was raised to 6400 rpm.

Hope that helps. Still runs like a champ and accelertes like no Harley I've ever had. High smile factor on this upgrade!

Gary
