Would be interested in knowing how much Taylor charged you for the pair of 8" wires, and what the charge is for the 9.5" wire.

No doubt it is cleaner to solder the extensions in, the waterproof connectors are for convenience for many not comfortable with soldering.

Thanks!
I think I cut about 3/4" off the bolts. However, I didn't think that was a big deal because I figured with different applications or possibly a different (aftermarket) coil the longer bolts might be needed. I don't remember the exact length of the stock bolts but, if they had been 1/4" longer, I would have reused them. I still have them at the house. I'll try and find them and give you an exact length.

The 8" wires from Taylor were $26.99 (8mm). However, shipped they were $36.19 which I thought was unreasonable. The set was actually listed for an '08 or newer Rocker or "center mount twin cam coils" application. They also offer an 8.2mm set that is $36.99 and a 10.4mm set (black only) that is $51.99.

The custom made wire is going to be $13.50. However, I don't know how much they're going to hit me for shipping yet. The first time they shipped UPS. This time they gave me the option of UPS or regular mail. I chose regular mail. In retrospect, I would have just ordered a custom set with one 8" wire and one 9.5" wire (135° plug connectors). You may be able to get away with 9" wire for the rear cylinder. I'll report back on that when the new wire comes in (with pictures).

The reason that I chose to go with the Taylor wires is that I had a set of Taylor wires previously and I liked them. The wires I had (and the new ones) are blue to match my paint scheme. You can get them in a variety of different colors. I won't swear to it, but, I think for the '07 and newer Softails which have a different coil, two 8" wires will work fine. If I'm not mistaken the plugs on those are equally spaced on the coil whereas the earlier coil plugs are offset to one side. Of course, that's assuming that one orients the coil with the plug connections upward. I've noticed that a lot of folks are choosing to orient the coil with the plug connections oriented toward the ground which will require much longer plug wires. I didn't experiment with that orientation or take any measurements to determine the needed plug wire length.

Weather-pak makes great connectors. I've used them religiously in custom auto wiring applications. I can't remember if Weather-pak offers a smaller connector than what you have in your kit. If they had been a bit smaller I might have used them. Another consideration for me was that I didn't need a four wire plug. My coil harness only has three wires.

I was an electronics tech when I was in the Navy so, soldering is pretty much second hand to me. However, I realize that a lot of folks don't have a soldering iron lying around or are not adept at soldering. If I had thought about it before-hand, I would probably have used a sealed solder connector (i.e. Tyco, Pico, Electralink) instead of soldering. For most folks though, installing pins on wires and assembling the connectors is the definitely the way to go.

This is a cool mod, but has anyone ran this setup for a good amount of time? Reason I ask is you are putting the coil in a area that will generate more heat directly to it vs. it's stock location behind the rear cyl. DK have you considered making this kit with a heat shield behind the coil to protect it more and deflect the heat? Just a thought since it sits in the middle of the two cyl's if you relocate it.

Id imagine the coil getting better air up by the horn rather than down by the rear cylinder since its usually running the hottest of the two..

Cool, thanks for the info! I am going to re-look at the bolt length.

BTW, our PRO RACE wires that we sell for $22.95 are the Taylor 10.4 mm wires that they are selling for $51.99.

Yeah, you are right, the coils on the carbed bikes are offset so the rear plug wire needs to be a little longer. The one for the EFI bikes are centered and the wires can be the same length.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Heat and vibration were concerns before we started, but we found they actually run a bit cooler out in the open, and even though they are subjected to more vibration, it is a non-issue.

We have had one installed on the shop Dyna for over 8 months and over 6k miles. Most of those miles were put on in the hot Mississippi summer months.

We also have several other Dynas and Softails that have been running them for a few thousand miles.

We have a couple thousand Sportys running essentially the same set up, some of them for over 5 years.

Zero problems with heat or vibration.

Definitely looking forward to this one and can't wait till it arrives. DK has been great answering questions quickly and they shipped the parts out the next day. If the quality is half as good as their customer service has been so far I'll be very pleased.

Hey guys, hope ya don't mind me crashing in here sideways but I'm lookin for a coil harness plug for my new build. I like the old style coil better but the newer ones with the plug in ign wires makes a cleaner install. So far I've looked everywhere and have come up empty handed. If anybody has one, I'd sure like to purchase it. Thanks!

Delphi makes the male side of the plug. Most electronic parts houses either have it or can order it.

If you are looking for the female side of the plug, NO ONE makes them. The only place you can find them is built into the coil. When we were designing our Coil Relo we wanted to use the same plugs for the wire extension, but found out that the female side simply does not exist. Delphi will make them special....minimum order is 10,000 units!!!

It's very straightforward and well thought out. I just installed it a couple of weeks ago. My only problem was I ordered the Screaming Eagle wires with it, which are fitted....and I mean EXACTLY long enough. That being the case, the rear wire goes under the tank fuel fitting but the fitting actually touches it, which, with vibration, may cause a problem.

When they learned about it, DK Custom, to their credit, offered to trade out to the slightly longer wires they sell but I declined and instead bought a tank lift. Now the rear wire clears by about 3/8" or a bit better. Looks awesome.

Lastly, DK Custom processes and ships fast. Like really fast. And the product is top notch. Once I get by bike buttoned back together I'm gonna photo it up and I'll post some here, as well as on DK Custom FB page.

Just providing some info, take it for what it's worth.
