I just built a 106". In my opinion it was a waste of effort.

I much rather would have just dropped in a 120R, it would have cost the same or even less once the stock motor was sold. I went full-tilt with stage IV heads, 50mm throttle body, Woods cams and blah blah blah...

You make a good point. I pretty much did the same going from the 107" to the 117". If you even think you might want more it's probably best to just bite the bullet and do it as you'll save a bunch of money in the long run.

There is a big difference in price (and huge difference in performance) between my 107 and the 117", so budget and ultimate goal should be carefully considered before starting the build.

Why would you say it was a waste of effort? What were your power goals for the motor whp/tq wise? Did you get it dyno tuned, what where the numbers?

It's not the dyno numbers I care about. Whether it's 110 out of a 107 or 120-ish out of a 120R doesn't matter to me.

What does matter is that I spent $1300 on a set of heads, $450 on cams, $500 or so for the pistons and barrels, another $150 on adjustable pushrods, $150-ish on a gasket set, electronic compression release harness, etc. plus tax. So that's around $2500 with a buddy and me doing the labor. Add another $1200-$1500 if I would have paid for labor.

The 120R is about $2k more than my parts alone. I still would have bought the same clutch, bigger throttle body, air cleaner setup, Mastertune and exhaust. Maybe I would have done a chain conversion with the 120R...

But, bottom line, I'd have a spare motor. And if I sold it could offset the difference in cost.

Just sayin, 120 cubic inches is better than 107, especially if you don't have to build it. And the 120R is a bargain. There will be one in my bagger soon enough...

JC,
No disrespect ment here and im not tryin to start an argument.
Im bettin you knew about the 120r and costs befor you did the 106 and no amount of persuasion was gonna change your mind at the time. So you coudda done the 120r, that was then, what you say you shoudda done is hindsight, too late to go back to then.
Welcome to the shoudda coudda been there done that club. Life is a great teacher, too bad it kills all its pupils
Good luck on your next build as im sure your not done yet.

Or - No replacement for displacement ...

107 will be big enough for this build I am sure. I have no issue with those that want more, but this will put me at the max I am willing to ride.
If I want more I will get an R1

I'm a big proponent of going bigger in displacement and power. It gets very addictive, I should know. The only thing I'm reluctant about is tearing into a perfectly good motor on a newer & low mileage bike/car. Plenty of power to be had on a 96" with some bolt-on mods.
Not trying to talk you out of it. Just in my opinion.

FWIW, I did the S&S 106 kit over a year ago and I have loved every second of it. By far the cheapest/easiest way to add 10 cubes that I've experienced. It only took me an evening and $700 to install it. I think that the price is cheaper now. If you have the tools, then it's worth it. All you're doin is swapping the jugs and pistons. While you're at it, throw in a new set of cams since you'll have the heads off. I also bought/installed a thundermax at the same time....so the total upgrade cost me around $1500 with everything...but like I said...I love it.

Hope it helps.

its all in what you want your bike to do. I would love a bigger motor but will probably keep my motor stock for at least a few thousand more miles. Some guys just want to race there bikes and unless they can beat every other bike on the road they consider it a waste of money. I just want some more power. Im sure a well set up 103, 106 or 107 would be more than enough for me. If you would be happy with a mid level upgrade (plenty of people are) then I think you are on the right track with your mods.
