You have to significantly divert your eyes from the road to check your speed... to check your blinkers ... the check your high beams... and your OIL PRESSURE IDIOT LIGHT. I don't know about other riders, but I'm pretty sure that if that light came on my engine would be toast before I ever noticed it. Tank mounting these gauges is done purely for aesthetics, not for function. I have already purchsed a flat-top gas tank and will be moving my gauges to the bars, though I'm doing this more because I prefer the smooth lines of a flat-top tank.

Is it a little akward to check your speed? Seems like the speedo would be out of your line of sight unlike the handlebar mounted kind.
Checking the speedometer doesn't bother me, but like Z says, checking the idiot lights is a pain. The speedometer is big enough that it just takes a quick glance. I find myself looking for the turn signal indicators longer than I want to have my eyes off the road. The handlebar clamp mounted Harley mini tach works well for me.
