Default Exhaust question

I have a FXDC '11, with a SE a/c and map. Runs good and cool. My question is, if after market slip-ons are added, probably Rush 2 or 2 1/4", will there be a significant improvement over the stock exhaust, or just a rise in noise level?

I've had Pythons, way too loud, and Rush 2 1/4", not too bad but were on touring duals. I enjoy the quieter ride of the stock exhaust but if opening up the exhaust some will noticeably improve hp and tq, I would consider changing. If the improvement is only at 4000+ rpm, and as I don't ride up there, I'll be happy with the stock pipes.

My hearing is pretty shot and unless it is really worth it, stock pipes make the ride more enjoyable for me. dd50/tomp

sounds like a 2 into 1 system would fill your need for sound and midrange performance

A change of exhaust will not give you a "significant" improvement by itself. Sounds like stock pipes might be fine for you.
Sound was the biggest reason I dropped my stock pipes on every bike I have owned.

Supertrapp makes one of the best 2 into 1 systems. If quiet power is what you're looking for, check them out. They are also tunable so you can adjust the volume by adding or taking off discs in the end cap.

Most riders slap on drag pipes or slip ons, but some like me prefer a 2 into 1 system. 2 into 1 will give better performance on the fly while the drag will give you a quick off the line(hence - drag).

The best mod for the bike is the pipe and a cold air intake(heavy breather), but of course then there's the added cost of the engine supertuner and then a dyno cost for best results(kaching sound). Perfomance mods can get pricey quickly especially if you have to pay some one else to do it, if not then there's just the dyno fee, unless you have a buddy willing to let you jump on there for a few beers.(still looking)

If you just change the exhaust you will notice some increase and nicer sound, but it will not be as significant as adding the air intake. Its always a choke point on the engine somewhere unless you do a complete custom engine build. Ex. Change the pipes, better exhaust flow, now need more air, add air cleaner, more air, now needs retune for more gas, more gas, now need more lift, better cams, now need better heads for combined air and fuel, now need more power, add cubic inches and/or high comp pistons. This is probably overkill for what your asking but I started out just like you wanting a bit more performance and went with the cheapest slip ons I could find. Best of luck and keep posting your mods.

2 cents...

Switching to open pipes for sound or style is certainly OK, but the bike is only going to sound faster. It has been shown here over and over again, dyno charts galore, that opening up the exhaust hurts bottom end (torque) performance but you could see some +4000rpm improvement. Difference is insignificant unless you also change the EFI tune. Some expensive exhausts are tunable, but you will find that if you tune them for performance (and not using the subjective butt meter) they end up sounding about the same the stock pipes.

You can say the same about opening up the air filter, except the difference is a bit more noticeable at 4000+ rpms.
