Yep, I have the u-bolt variety, never even gave it a second thought. Not sure how the others are mounted? I have noticed the prices on aftermarket ones have been going down.
For some reason I think u-bolts aren’t use with Lindby engine guards. I can't open their install instruction PDF file on the web site? Maybe you can? http://lindbycustom.com/

My sportster didn't used u-bolts, but engine mounting bolts. I believe others mount behind floorboards attachment points. U-bolts look like an after thought to me.
Just go to the HD web site and look at the installation instructions for the FLD Crash Bars. Yes they use U-Bolts that go around the frame.....I was surprised that HD did that, what a crappy design. I wouldn't put a U-Bolt around my frame because it would scratch the crap out of it. When you finally get around to taking the training wheels off you will have a frame that is ground down to bare metal.
Have one? Where did you get it and how does it mount? The one from HD uses u-bolts and I don't like that.
Have the Harley one. For structural stuff like that, I prefer the Harley equipment and I let the dealer do it. I'm not all that great at such things, don't have ALL the right tools (and no place good to work on it.) Besides, I only paid the dealer money. Rather not pay with my life.
It looks good. Also had them add the "Nostalgic Collection" highway pegs and the Harley fog lamps at the same time. Not sure if it works because I haven't tipped over yet.

I’m sure glad to have been educated on the
unbelievable damage a couple of u-bolts can do.
Do you have any photos of you analyses?
Wonder why HD hasn’t put out a fix it solution?
I added black heat shrink tubing on mine bolts for looks,
not knowing my frame will soon be destroyed.
Live and learn I guess.
