I run the 31t and 70t with my 5 speed no problems even cruising 80 all day on road trips. Only downside is I lose about 5 MPG cruising that hi, but still over 30 so who cares.
I have no problem giving it a quick twist at 80 to pass any offending cage even when riding 2up.
31t is a good compromise for those of us with a 5 speed.

I have an '06 that comes with a six speed but a smaller rear sprocket than the newer models with the 96" motor. My commute to work is all interstate and the motor stays well above 3k rpm for my 60 mile ride, it does just fine. I think it actually runs better at that speed, they don't run well when you lug them along.
