I went to fill up my tank the other day and when I unscrewed the gas cap and huge wooshing sound occurred. Didn't think much about it. Then about a week later, after another fill up, I was riding at 60 mph and my bike died. The engine shut off, still had lights/turn signals. coasted to the side of the road and it started right back up. Could the two be related?
I'm going to check my battery cables tonight to see if they're tight, but I'm wondering what else it could be. I don't want to be stranded somewhere...Thanks.
On a 2009 the gas cap is NOT vented. The Gas Tank vents through the Charcoal Canister. If the Vent Line from the Gas Tank to the Charcoal Canister is pinched, or maybe even plugged say perhaps by someone who thought they were doing a favor by removing an emissions device ? ? ?
BTW the Charcoal Canister does nothing to hurt performance . . . it may look ugly as all get out on some bikes because of where Harley puts it . . . . but it's a pretty harmless bit of stuff.
And Oh Yea, your stalling problem is almost certainly caused by this.

I hope I'm not asking a stupid question and insulting you but when you fill up with gas and put the cap back on, are you tightening enough so it starts clicking? If you don't then the venting part of it won't work. Hope that helps.
Just because it has a charcol can doesnt mean the cap isnt vented. The cap only allows air into tank not out. The vent line is the fuel vapor out to the canister. If its like every other twin cam.
