Broken stud in trans from muffler bracket! Known Harley problem?!?
What the hell?? I was taking my rather tame SE slip-on system off my 09' Fat Bob to install my Crossbacks and there was a bolt on the bottom left corner of tranny that holds the factory muffler bracket in place. It was sheared off but held in place through the double nut. Crap!
I sheared that bolt off on my Wide Glide from dragging the stock pipes in corners. Mine was under warranty though, so the dealer took care of it. Good luck.
Same here on my Wide Glide. I had two broken off. They told me it was a common problem and fixed it under warranty. I discovered it when I took off my stock pipes to put on my new V&H Bigshots so I just had the bike towed to the dealer with the stock pipes still off and just had them install the new pipes once they got the bolt issue fixed.
Well, warrenty is over and since I'm the second owner I'm not getting anything from the Harley dealer, only an offer to book it in a month from now and at least a $100 to fix it if all goes well.
So I'm cheap and I don't want to wait so after a couple calls to some buddies I got some free advice.
Picked up a set of good quality square end easy-outs, a HSS drill bit, and a metal punch. I was told that the best penatrant for steel in aluminum is diesel fuel. So I soaked a small rag and stuffed it in the hole. I'll keep doing that for the next day or so and pray that it will lossen off. Then pray that the drilling and easy-out will work.
Wish me luck!
I've cut grooves in broken studs then just used a screwdriver, It depends on how much you have to work with, I drill them then use an easy out if that doesn't get it..
Left hand drill bits are the go. Hopefully they will grab and screw the ****er out without even needing the ezy-out. Break one of those off in there and your in for a whole new world of pain
