Let us know how that works on the primary. I haven't done it to my primary cover yet because I know it could melt off.

I'm thinking of doing the stock wheels on my '07 FXD. It sounds like I'd be fine just leaving everything assembled and on the bike and taping and masking everything that I don't want painted around the wheels. Is this correct?

Also, can anyone give me an estimate of how many cans I'll need to give a good even coverage and 4-6 coats on both wheels?

Thanks in advance for any help and thanks for sharing this idea!

I did 4 coats on both my primary and belt guard and ive only used about half a can so far. Id say get two just to be safe, Id also say get 3 because you'll find more stuff you want to spray.

Just buy 4 cans to be safe. As for painting them ON the bike, the front wheel will be pretty straightforward, but the rear could be a PITA, even with a stand. Make sure you cover everything like the brakes, swingarm, shocks, etc 'cause the overspray will getcha. The good news is, it usually won't require much taping on the tire side, it usually just peels right off the tires without peeling it off the rims. You'll have to re-do it any time you get a new tire.

Also, if you have a way to spin the wheels at a slow speed for at least the first few minutes of each coat, your finish will come out great, and use LIGHT coats- Go Gung-Ho with thick coats and you'll have craters.

Haha! I actually already said I myself, "however many anyone tells me to get, I'll buy a can or two extra, for when I inevitably deside I want to use it on something else!"

Thanks for the advice.

I bought the last 7 cans on the shelf at Lowes. So far I have used 3 of them to do everything I did (lowers, trees, battery box cover, signals). I have done the lowers and the trees 2X with those 3 cans and I still have some left over. I am keeping the other ones for winter when I will either redo what I have done or simply re-coat it.
