decel pop/backfire?????
hi all, i have read in the posts that a decel pop or backfire from the exhaust can be caused by an exhaust leak or running to rich how do you tell witch one is the cause of the backfire ?[:@]
you have to consider your individual bike, and what you have done to it.
Assuming its a new bike - and you haven't done anything to the exhaust yourself....
If its stock, they tend to be that way from the factory. And there is not a lot to for it without spending money (I am assuming you are EFI - Carb folks can chime in on things to do with a carb)
You can add a PCIII to a stock bike, and made adjustments to get rid of the pop. Power Commander has stock bike maps for the PCIII
You can do the basic stage I mods, intake and exhaust, and do a ECM download to adjust. That may or may not help - every bike is different.
You can do the stage I and add a PCIII, that should take care of it for you (again, this is all assuming you are EFI)
Even with the PCIII, most tuners don't adjust the 0 throttle position, and many folks (like myself) have to make some adjustments to that setting to get rid of rapid throttle release popping.
If this is an older bike that has been worked on, pipes changed out, has some corrosion, etc... then there is a possibility you have an exhaust leak. How to check for that, I don't know. You might try a search on this forum, or someone might chime in here.

sorry i should have posted this first i have a 2003 fxd with astage 1 big sucker a/c #46 pilot jet #190 main 2 1/2 turns out on mix screw & se2 slipon mufflers with bct baffles and new muffler clamps
I have an 02 wide glide and had the backfire problem. I found that the crossover pipe had a hole in it so I cut out the crossover and made end caps to cover the holes. Now my bike decels very nicely indeed, no more pop pa pop while slowing--jack
thanks to allwho replied i think i will change the exhaust gaskets as well as the crossover tube gasket becauseithink that backfiring is not normal

I was told that due to the fact I was running srtaight pipes with no baffles ,and I was probly running a little lean(mine is carbed) I could richen it up with tha idle adj. screw on the bottom of the carb.Or I could put some baffles in and it would help. P.S. I found my front pipe clamp was loose also. Dave...
