changing air filter
Sorry, yeah, K & N. Re-oiling the filter is what I should have said - K & N calls it "re-charging"...
that stuck in my head when I wrote that..
I have owned for the last 15 years or more. Swear by em. They last forever.
I was trying to sort out whether you were talking stock filter or otherwise.
Can't remember the original question now.

1.when the time comes to change the stock filter according to the manual, do yourselves a favor andfor the same30-50$ get the K&N one. If you're running stock setup get the HD-1499 like I did.
2. New filtersdo come pre-oiled from the factory, butnot very much, so after 200 miles or so most of the oil is gone and white spots (clean cotton) show up. Buy the recharger kit (cleaner + oil) and add some oil as per the instructions. Do this patiently and the oiling will last a long time.
3.K&N does claim that the filtration will get better after the media gets a little bit dirty, which makes sense because the particlesstuck in the oil film attract more particles from the air as it passes through.
Of course, this doesn't mean you should let your filter get filled with slime ECT...visually inspect it2-3 times a year and when it gets too dirty (use common sense) recharge it as per instructions.
4. The3 torx screws do come completely out, and then theplate can come off too, leaving the filter element free.
5. The two rubber hoses at the back are the head breather ones. Verify that they are tucked in their holes properly after installation of the filter. Or better yet, go to an external breather setup and stop dumping oil into your cylinders.
