Default Belt / Tire Rub??

Pardon me if there's hundreds of threads here, I'll do a search when I get home.... But, if anyone has a quick answer for me, for now, that would be great.... I just bought my first Dyna Wide Glide ('98) the other day (photos coming soon) and noticed that the belt is ever-so-slightly touching the rear tire, or appears to be. Is this common, should it be huge concern? I kinds think it's not quite good, but what do I know; I have an '81FXE (in re-rebuild now) and a '75 Ironhead (in the shop now).....

Thanks,

82ndpara

I would tend to say no it is not the norm. To me it sounds like someone put to wide a tire on it.

As ryda said, it may be a wider than stock tire, what is on there?
OR
It may be the rear wheel is not aligned properly and sitting in the swingarm at an angle.

When the bike is rolling the belt will spin out or ride to the outside taking it away from the tire just slightly.

Default Belt Rub

If it is just touching and only lightly rubbing, then you're good to go. If there is any kind of belt deflection then you need to find out why.

I would think that anything rubbing the belt would be bad, as cumulatively over time that will wear the belt down and the tire. Maybe the abrasion would be negligible, but I would definitely check into it.

I would have to agree here.................

You can take measurements and use a spacer to correct the offset of the pulley to the rim, then modify the wheel s axle spacer the distance you added in the spacing........

I have done a few at my friends shop when utilizing wider tires on bikes.

I myself am getting ready to replace my belt with chain drive so the measurements are critical to getting it right.

Another alumni of the eighty deuce.......

You bought a '98 Dyna recently and the belt is rubbing the tire? If the tire is within spec for that model bike then you've got a misalignment somewhere.

Was the bike purchased through private party or dealer?

Check the accident history. Catch where i'm going with this? An alignment issue could be a plethora of things if that bike was ever in an accident. And in most states it's illegal to sell a vehicle without disclosing the accident history.

A friend of mine had a similar problem, in his case the rubbermounts of the swingarm were busted, might give you a direction what to look for.

I tried to take photos, but they sucked so I'm not going to bother posting them. I checked the tire, it's a Dunlop D402 marked "Harley Davidson", MU 85B16. The bike was purchased through a dealer here in Western Mass (Southampton). I have to go back to the dealer next week for something, I'll have their service guys have a look.
Thanks for all the leads to check on...

P.S. Pics of the bike posted on new thread.....

The belt should never touch the tire.
