If I order the bars I want they come in pwdrcoated black or chrome. I want to get them pwdrcoated cobalt blue like my bike paint. I found a place that looks like they can do it right and not too expensive. Question is should I order the black pwdrcoated bars to have recoated blue or order the chrome ones to have them done. I would imagine chrome would have to be removed before my blue coat could be done and blue on black coating may or may not be a good thing. One option is to try and order a set raw steel, but other than that what do you guys think I should do.
Chrome is $140 and black is about $175.I'd be mailing them off after I receive them to have the coating done.
get the chrome....ive had great results using transparent powders over chrome!
looks almost anodized.... might just be the ticket for your bars!
here's a shot of the stock[chrome] football a/c cover i did on wifey's bike
done in transparent purple..pics dont really do justice, but should give you some idea of what can be done

shot of the same powder on the stock[chrome] horn and derby covers
if you don't want to go that way though, i'd say get the chrome ones. i think they'll have to remove the black powder coat before putting another coat on. either way the bars will need to be blasted phirst, so why pay extra phor something that's gotta get removed.
I had mine powder coated blackright over the chrome. The came out perfect.I now have my own home powder coating system and have coated many of my chrome parts with no problem
I'm going to see if they'll send me a set raw steel. Might save a few $. Pwdrcoating can be thick, and too layers of it would be seriously thick. I remember a friend ordering truck parts and having to redrill all the holes just to get the bolts in where the wholepiece had been coated.
A set of cobalt blue 12 inch z apes would look dang good on the Bob.

thanks for the compliments....it's all in the prep work
i like the idea of using transparents over chrome...it's a look that hasnt really been exploited.....yet!
just think...instead of the whole "blacking out" everyone's doing now....you could be "blue-ing out" or "red-ing out" "freaking transparent candy emeffin tangerine-ing out"!
Mike that purple looks COOL! Great idea! Love the matching purple cables.
I just sent my Street Bob's stock chrome HD mini apes to get powdercoated black. Yup, doing that 'blacking out thing.' The powdercoating place will bead blast it first before putting the black on. BTW, it was a tough decision picking out the right black for the job since there were only 40 or so different blacks to choose from.
I was just thinking this morning about powdercoating my bars a color other than black. Can't wait to see them. Check with your powdercoater, I'm pretty sure they can bake off old powder and apply new. Baking off the poder you don't want may be cheaper than sandblasting chrome.
