I had the same problem with my kit. I took two 3/8 stainless flat washers and a cut-off wheel cut slots in the washers so they would slip over the bolt put the slots down so they don't show and tightened the bolts back if you do this you don't have to remove the wiring. every thing is tight and working fine.
Is your reason for doing this to move the docking points OUT farther?
That may take care of the rattling because there would be more tension on the bracket.
the bracket is loose because you can't tighen the bolt all the way because of the threads, put the washers on the outside of the bushing it takes up the space because the bolt is too long it bottoms out before it gets tight.

The problem he is trying to solve is different.
It is not a problem with tightening the docking points to the strut.
It is a problem with the backrest bracket rattling inside the docking bushing!
The instructions that come with the docking kit say that when it gets loose and starts to rattle to loosen the bolt and turn the phonelic bushing to a different position. Due to the vibration of the engine it wears a flat spot on that bushing and starts to rattle. When mine started to rattle I just wrapped black electrical tape around the bushing and put the backrest back on. This was last summer and I haven't had any trouble with it since. It doesn't take much tape and you may have to experiment to get it tight enough and still be able to get it back on.
Actually Old sporty and the others are right about what my problem was... there is not enough thread on the kit to get it tight enough to keep the whole assembly from rattling/being loose. It would buzz REALLY bad during decel if I had the sissy bar or luggage rack installed and just rattle like a bell if nothing was docked.
My fix... I used some old o-rings and cut them so I could slip up under the inside of the fender and between it and the strut where the docking bolt screws in. Loctite put back on and it tightened perfectly.
Thanks for all the suggestions etc. Forum is awesome. I wish HD would design this sorta stuff right from the start!
