I just order a supertrapp for my 05 fxdc. I like the tunabilty and the look. From memory the sound is a bit mellow with closed cap. But I'll run my like that for a bit then maybe get the open cap later or even better one of those caps that you can open and close.
Well.... if you can stand the sound of a Supertrapp, that's the way to go. I generally like my Harley's loud, but decided to go with performance over sound on my Dyna. I did not like the look of that long *** muffler though, so I made a shorter cone and shortened the guts inside also. To maximize the sound I covered all but about 4" of the perforated baffle that's inside (so it's like a solid header pipe until the last 4 inches). I am running the open end cap too to keep the noise level as high as it will go. I had Rinehart staggered duals on the bike before, there quite a horsepower bump from the Rineharts as they come with baffles, I usually ran them with no baffles or a half baffle for a bit more on the top end. (huge dip in the midrange without baffles though). Anyways, here is what the pipe looks like and as you can see on the dyno sheet, it's not a bad performer compared to the 2 into 2 stepped drag pipes. Granted, I did not dyno it with the full length muffler, it might have done better than my shortened version, I don't know, but I wasn't willing to sacrifice the look I wanted. The last dyno chart shows the best run I could muster from the Supertrapp vs the best run I could get with unbaffles stepped drag pipes. Hope that helps you.
Very nice setup. This is probably very close to the direction I will head in. I like the Bassani "shorts", but this would be a nice alternative. It might be the picture, but is the exhaust angled down?
No, it sits level with the ground, just the angle of the picture. You have more options with a newer bike. It's limited for the 00-05 Dynas. Alot of stuff is no longer made. I'm sure any of the 2:1's are good enough, you should buy what you like for looks and sound.
I used to get caught up in the horsepower number game, but I realized that I spend 99% of the time on the bike cruising down the road at 2500-3000 RPMs. I passed semis in 5th or 6th gear more than I raced the engine to 6 grand, so I changed my thought process.
The only nice thing about a Supertrapp is the ability to tune out that torque dip you will most likely see with some of the other brands. I personally am not in love with the sound, but I have other bikes I can ride that make my ears smile. Here is what I'm talking about with the disc changes and how it changes the curve.

When I took a look at your original post, I thought the same thing ... I noticed that you were giving up between about 5 - 10 ft-lb of torque at the range where most people spend a lot of time ... around 2800 - 3800 RPM ...
I get your point, but it's not as bad as it appears. I never ran the Rineharts with baffles, and after dyno testing those pipes with/without/bolt trick/half baffle, I settled on running a half baffle to keep some of the top end. This dyno chart shows the best example of apples to apples. I was down about 1-2 ftlbs from 28-3800 (which is half that in horsepower at that RPM) so you can't notice any difference at all. But the gains from 4000 to redline are substancial, 8 hp at 6000 rpms. I felt like I was wasting the ported heads and the other work I'd done with the Rineharts. I guess the point to the OP is just get what you like and who cares about chasing a number if it runs good and rides good.
If you want original, check out Hacker Custom Exhaust. The War Header or Track Tuned. I think they're in/near Santa Cruz or Boulder Creek. Definitely won't see another one out there in your area.
Contacted Ron Hacker @ Hacker Custom Exhaust. Seems to be a quality product. I like to deal locally and or with a owner of a company. Good dude knows his stuff. I may go with the War Header instead of the SuperTrapp. One of my concerns is clearance with my floorboards.
I am following this thread with great interest because my tuner, Drew at Firebreathing swears by the Bassani Road Rage. He claims from his experience (and yes I am aware that tuners are a strange breed! LOL!) this pipe gives the best over all performance on the 96 and 103 motors when coupled with the Dave Mackie 575L cams.
Bob
My vote goes to the Bub 7. Sub $500.00... Not obnoxious & has a nice deep tone.
I was going to go with the Thunder header until I read about dragging issues. I also dont like how the rear pipe runs all the way forward then runs back next to the front head pipe which causes the pipes to run hotter.

Having a properly tuned and equal length pipe is more important for power vs. the minor amount of heat gained by them being side by side. The rear pipe is usually too short or bent too restrictive compared to the front. Not so when the pipes are run this way. I do like the curve of mine a lot better than the Thunderheader though.
Glad this thread is here, I had a TH on a street bob and liked it enough. The finish sucked though. And I scraped the hell out of it, so much so I added a skid plate to it. Any thoughts on the best pipe for ground clearance? Was just looking at the hacker exhaust site the pipe on the 99-05 dyna looks sick. I'm looking at one for my new 01 t sport. Stock motor for now.
